One thing about planes, the air is not circulated front to back. It is side to side, and generally just those around you are affected. The air in the plane is refreshed about 20 times an hour, yes fresh air is brought in. They also use hepa filters. So, someone in row 8 streaming a baseball game on the Wifi and eating/shucking peanuts probably won't have any affect on the poor kid whose family bought tickets late and got stuck in the back of the plane.

Of course on the ground the air is stale, so that is a different story. Air is not circulated as much, but at that point people are boarding and allergy family is already past peanut guy (unless they showed up late). The only other time there may be issues is when the FA brings the empty peanut wrappers by in the trash, or when they get off the plane at their destination.

The newer the aircraft, the better the air. Most people get sick from touching the surfaces previously soiled by someone with a cold. If you're worried, bring wipes, clean your tray/armrest/window, and hope for the best.

Oh, I agree. Just give me something to drink, I usually eat before getting on a plane and snacks aren't necessary. Besides, those small bags are just a tease. Like I said, I'll bring my own snacks to munch on while catching that game during the fight.

There will always be someone who has more severe allergies to something than others, but like I said, watch out for yourself, relying on others will just lead to trouble.

Here's something for all of you to think on. We had a kid at world the other day, who I am guessing has a VERY severe peanut allergy. The parents were clearly doing all they could to prevent him coming into accidental contact, but if it's in the only air you breathe (on an airplane) there's not much you can do. The kid was wearing a shirt that said Warning Severe Peanut Allergy and they had a dog with them who's purpose was to sniff for any evidence of peanuts, the dog came in a sniffed the row of the boat the kid was getting on before he got on. Now if the allergy is that severe, I think it can be classified as a disability, the problem is finding a way to determine where that line is and how to ensure that people with a mild allergy don't get classified as disabled.

As for whoever mentioned all those other food allergies. They only have reactions when they eat those foods, many people with peanut allergies can have a reaction by inhaling a tiny bit of peanut dust. That is completely different. I have a friend who is allergic to strawberries, I can sit next to her and eat strawberries, I can't do that with many people with a peanut allergy.

That has got to be on the upper end of the reactions spectrum. I thought mostly you would have the skin reaction and sometimes breathing problem that an epi-pen could fix, and that would be from ingesting by accident.
(even those would cause me worry if my kids had ever had that)

not a big peanut fan, but I buy the trader joes brazil nuts and almonds as snacks(unsalted!) and that is a favorite to take along when traveling.

do people with peanut algeries also react to other types of nuts, or is it limited to just the peanut?

I have a friend with a Potato Allergy on Par with some Peanut Allergies. If you cook potatoes in a house she's in, the steam will give her an anaphyalactic (sp?) reaction. Same thing with drive thru french fries in a car with her, she thought she could take it... but apparently if there's a full mini-van of fry munchers, then even opening the windows till everyone finishes their fries isn't gonna save her.

So it's not always peanuts.

Then again I say, take your own responsibility and bring a mask. Peanut allergies make up 1% of people. You are the minority. The rest of the world should not have to bend around your needs.

NO, they get crutches or a wheel chair, they take care of them self so they can be mobile. People with peanut allergies when flying can wear a mask for the short time they are on the plane.

I'm sorry, but not allowing one to snack on peanuts during a flight is hardly what I would call a threat to anyone's god-given rights, while allowing them to could mean death to some folks. Your metaphor of making people carry folks who are unable to walk is flawed. Even with a wheelchair or crutches, certain accommodations must be made, such as having ramps and walkways that are accessible to those who have such a disadvantage. Besides, do we know that wearing a filter-mask would be sufficient protection in cases of sever peanut allergies?

I wonder if they use peanut oil to fry with. I use that in my turkey fryer (and potatos!)

I guess you could develop an allergy to just about anything.

It's not the oil. She's not allergic to peanuts. She likes Peanuts. She's allergic to Potatoes.

Every airline I have been on gives out free snack of some kind. Mostly cookies (pack of 2).

Delta gives out the BEST cookies. They are a cinnamon ginger sugar cookie by Biscoff.

The dogs I have had would eradicate all traces of peanuts(or any other food)
immediately, and they weren't even trained! :p:

It' is my god given right to have peanuts when I want them. Why should those people that CAN have have to do without because of the small percent of people that CAN'T.

Do you eat anything with onions in it? If so I demand you stop becasue I am allergic to them and you cutting an onion the juice may get in the air and travel over to my house and I my die.

So as I said, there are 2 real solutions to this problem.

1) If your allergic, wear a mask when you fly.


2) Offer peanut free flights. Tickets would cost more for those flights since special preparations would have to be made on the plane (changing the air filters, wiping down the cabin from stem to stern after every flight, stocking the plane with the alternative snack, ect) those flights could also be limited to certain times during the day (also to give preparation time of the plane). To get those flights one would have to show valid proof of the allergy.

In other words, the majority (people without the allergy) should not be the ones to suffer.
