not a SG but an interesting situation at Sesame

We have season passes to Sesame Place (no worries, I'm not that type of SP holder) so I average about 1-2 a week there. Anyway last week we decided to do their character meal, you need reservations (it is at a set time) so you go there, check in and they tell you which numbered table to go to. So we check in, they say #21 so we sit down. Our table happens to be right by the door so I hear everything that is going on. An Asian family checks in and they tell them table #13. The father than tells the employee (who's about 16) he can not sit there and could they please assign them another table #) the employee goes, no, I can't, we are full, etc. The father once again, says please, we can not sit at #13, employee says same thing. I could tell the employee thought he was just being a PITA and she didn't understand there is a cultural reasoning for his request. So the girl says, you have to sit there or you won't have a table (keep in mind the place was still pretty empty and all tables were 6 tops) so the kids are getting upset, the father is getting frustrated and the poor employee is confused about why they are so upset. We had sat down but had not gotten any food yet (buffet) so I went up to the hostess and offered to switch tables with them. I really felt bad for the man and the employee. After we switched with them (the father was super grateful) the hostess came over talked with me for a few and I enlightened her in on why he needed a different table # and after I did the poor girl looked like she might crawl under the table!

Some of the DL CM here have heard this, but I think it fits this thread. Last Feb. a fav DLS Officer was called for jury duty. He really didn't want to go, only because of early hour & parking in Santa Ana is horrid. He decided all was right & his duty so he went willingly, though he could have been excused. We all absolutely knew he'd be chosen. No doubt, so we began a pool. The a.m. went great, with some laughter from the judge. Am not kidding. After lunch the remaining jury was reseated. DLS Officer was assigned a new seat. Yup, #13. He pleaded with the bailiff then judge 3 times asking he be given another seat. The answer was always "no." The forth request came after he stood up & respectfully told the judge; "Seat 13 just isn't my seat. Fraid I'm gonna have to vote guilty on all counts your Honor, Sir, Judge." The judge is now focused & truly amused. Probably amazed also. Judge again listens to #13's reguest for another seat. Wish I had been there. ;) The judge rises, steps down & said; "Mr. ______ Disney Land needs you faaaar more than I do. Dismissed!" :D: DLS Officer said he departed quickly before the judge changed his mind. We all lost in the pool. :(

I have seen judges that upon hearing that sort of statement to get out of jury duty, to slap a contempt charge. Judges have been know to lose their sense of humor really quickly when it comes to the running of their courtroom.

in addition, seat "13" is an alternate and generally the seats are not really numbered, the jurors are.

They usually have them set in order of their selection to the jury.

G P, NO, He was not playing a game!Was not trying to get out of jury duty. Not at all!! He did not even need to appear as he easily could have been exempt. Why would you "assume" such? You do not even know this person. The judge had a great sense of humor, so I was told & both were veteran Marines. Slap a contempt charge against a person who has given his life for this country, is a fine citizen & was being respectful in court? Oh, please. So if your above statement has merit, why has the judge kept in contact with this juror since he dismissed him? Maybe, just maybe the judge found qualities in this person he thought admirable. Qualities you would find fault with. BTW, seats in Santa Ana court are numbered.

Sorry, Main Streeter, but I'm with GP here. Maybe some of the humor is lost in a text retelling, but suggesting (even jokingly) that you're going to decide a case a certain way because you don't like how things are going for you personally can bring down the wrath of the court in a hurry. Judges tend to be extremely sensitive to even the faintest hint of impropriety or unfairness in their courtrooms. Glad it worked out for him, but he was treading dangerous ground.

I don't piss off the judge, I piss off the defense attorney with things like, "Well, if we find this guy guilty, no matter what, I think he should get the most punishment that the law allows." Worked on a capital murder trial they were trying to seat. He wanted me gone right away, the judge asked me a few questions, she was okay with my answers, but I saw the defense attorney make a note. Needless to say, I was out the door...
