Walmarts vary according to the area they're in. In my experience, their propensity for building in lower-income areas makes them a magnet for trouble. Basically, don't ever use a wal-mart in the New Orleans area. They're scary, dirty, and the majority of the employees will hate you just for existing.

And if the employees aren't bad enough, the extremely nasty contingent of shoppers will definitely do you in. I stopped shopping at the (then) local WM after my husband was offered a sexual favor in exchange for bus fare. Yes, that has caused me to have unfavorable opinions. Thankfully, living in the Windermere area, I can pretty much know the residents in the area would fight vehemently against the idea of a local wal-mart.

I'm not much for neighborhood snobbery, but this is one time it will work to my advantage. :)

I don't find the people at my local Wal*Mart to be a problem, but I still prefer the Target. We have a Super-Mega-Ultra-Wal*Mart or some such, and the place is just too damn big and spread out. I can get to the departments I need in Target way faster.

The amazing thing about Wal-Marts in Atlanta is there is not a single 24/7 one inside the perimeter actually downtown, but there are 24/7 ones outside of the perimeter. For my post-10PM grocery shopping I have to go to the Kroger that is listed on 4square as "Murder Kroger"

I would shop at Target if I had the choice, but there's not one close enough to me. I can't stand shopping at our local Wal-Mart for a variety of reasons, but here's the main thing: they never have what I need. Someone just mentioned that they come out with half of their list....same here! Our local Wal-Mart got all pissy because they originally asked to build a super WM and were denied, so they built a regular sized one. The last three years they've been hounding to build a Super WM, and just vacate the building they occupy now. Well, the township shot them down again, so they redid the store to add a couple of aisles a food and it seems they took away everything I ever bought. So, I only get a few things every now and again (like batteries) there because, again, they don't have what I need...thank goodness for BJs.

Yeah, might want to rethink that part of your post ;)

If I may get back to the subject of water-added ham, most hams do absorb water from the curing solution. If a ham absorbs more than a certain amount of water, by law it must be labeled water added. Smoked hams, if they are genuinely smoked and not sprayed with smoke flavoring, of course don't usually have water added, because they go to the smokehouse, are rubbed with a dry cure of spices and sugar, and smoked over a wood fire.

As to the Wal-Fart vs. Tarzhay issue, when WalMart came out they were great, but then they stopped selling American-made stuff, and went downhill from there. Besides, the last time I went to a Wal-Fart, it was dirty, crowded and had nothing. I used to be able to get just about anything there. Target is closer, has nicer employees, and generally has what I want.

I really think it depends on location. My local Walmart is very nice has great staff actually looks good and I also has what I am looking for. It was fought tooth and nail before they built it using the same arguments that it would put the other local places out of business, but I don't think anywhere has closed because Walmart took their business, in fact I think they're doing better then ever, including a store that was close to going out before Walmart was built has made a recovery and it is a direct competitor.

Of course, I try to avoid the Walmart downtown, I feel I might get mugged in their parking lot.

There is also a 24/7 Wal*Mart close to me which is great because of my late hrs. It is well lit, well stocked & clean. Usually has all I need plus more. If I hesitate to walk to the parking lot alone, not often, there is always a team member who will walk out & load things in car. @ 2 a.m. when shampoo, dog treats, pudding, white under blouses & sympathy, thank you, birthday cards are needed....Wal*Mart is my answer. Nope, am not trying to impress Cujo.
I'm more impressed that your local store is as described, if your talking about the one I'm thinking of.

One is Lincoln, or is it Euclid? Near DL. The other is Tustin in Orange. Your Wal*Mart is great too when near beach area.
