Tell me you love your job because...

Post by HMGar » Sun May 30, 2010 12:49 pm

My husband and I have a dream to someday in the next 10 to 20 years retire in Orlando and work for Disney.

For me it's been a life long dream. I even landed a job at Disneyland when I was in college one summer, but was unable to accept the job due to finances.

I read these boards occassionally. I get a kick out of many of your stories. However, having worked customer service for many years of my young adult life, I know too well that these "stupid guests" can sometimes make coming to work a real chore. I've hated a few of my jobs so much that I dreaded getting in the car for my commute.

What I'm looking for here is for anyone to preserve my dream and tell me that even though you encounter many a stupid guest, you still love your job and enjoy coming to work. Anyone?

It's certainly ok to tell me too, that you no longer feel the magic of Disney and you are working to earn a living not because you love it. I'm a dreamer, but I'm not unrealistic.

By the way, my family and I are leaving in 4 days to Disney World. We just love it and one of the many reasons are the incredible CMs we meet during our vacation. You people are the reason that I've had this dream for as long as I can remember. Thank you for your hard work and your smiles.

Love,

Heidi

Hi, Heidi! Thanks for posting.

I'm not a CM, so I'll leave it to others to respond fully to your question. But I sense that it's easy to get a skewed perspective from reading this site -- since so many CM's use it to vent, the stories are predominantly negative. But I'm sure most will tell you that most of their guest encounters are positive and magical, or they wouldn't keep coming back day after day.

Best wishes to you and your husband on your possible future with Mouse! Oh, and...

Like the singing marsupial said, for every SG story you read about here, there are probably 100 good ones out there.

and try and stay away from board x or y, because if you read some of the skewered ideas of entitlement they seem to have, it might make you question your own way of thinking about being a non-SG. (sort of the dark side!!)

I'm not going to lie, there are days when I wonder why I'm doing what I'm doing, but there are also days that I wouldn't change it for anything. There are always the SG that are rude and make you hate humanity, but you also get to make a lot of magic, and that's worth it. Plus, sometimes you just have to laugh at the pure stupidity. It's amazing how handing a child a sticker, trading a pin or even just calling them prince/princess can absolutely make their day, and yours! Yesterday at work we were just playing with a few kids and a bunch of Phineas and Ferb dolls and another CM made a great comment, where else can you get paid for playing?

So, that was a lot longer than I had anticipated, but yes, most of the time, I love my job and it's worth it.

It's been awhile since I was a CM, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Of course you have bad days like any other job, days when SG are yelling at you and you wonder why you do it. But I've never had any other job where, on a regular basis, things would happen that would bring tears to my eyes, or make me smile so much.

I think the positive things about being a CM more than make up for the encounters with SGs and such.

I love working at Disney. It's a lot of fun and I enjoy it for the most part. Naturally there are times it isn't so enjoyable but those are few and far between usually and no matter where I worked I'd have them.

I get paid to have fun and make magic. There's not many places I can say that about.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.

I love working at Disney. I've been working here (on and off) for over 5 years now, and I can't see myself working anywhere else. There have been bad moments, but the good moments far outweigh the bad ones.

I will be your guide for this magical journey into the movies. It's the perfect job for me, because I love movies! Is everybody ready? Great, because it's showtime. Ready when you are, CB!

Hello Heidi , I am the resident dragon and would like to offer you a very warm* welcome to that slice of the internet we call SGT. This website contains threads with quick twists and turns and I would like to advise you to not try to hard to keep up with them. Please keep your hands, arms, and legs safely inside the website at all times and enjoy your stay.

As for your question, I am not a CM, but from what I can tell, the good encounters far outweigh the bad.

*this instance of warm is actually hot**... very hot

**this instance of hot means that you are now literally on fire, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience

Hi Heidi, welcome to the family. I have seen the changes over the last 22 years. The are the good days and bad days. The grad nites are a challenge. I had a few of those. Now if I bug scheduling I might be able to snag one. Where did you work at DL? Disney is a good company to stick with. :)

I'm not a CM, but what I sense around here is that the CMs LOVE their jobs, but some people know how to get under their skin and screw it all up. It is easy to laugh at the SG questions, but I don't think they care about that as much as the entitled, rude, and abusive behavior that can really shake a person up. Unfortunately, this behavior is EVERYWHERE, and I think us guests who hang out here can relate. Not to mention that many posters here are very funny, never fail to cheer me up! :)
