I always just assumed she was dead... I dunno, that's kind of a sad thing for a 9-year-old to think, but she was never around in any of the Goofy Movies or tv shows. I was an impractically practical child. Oh, someone's mother is never ever around? She must be dead.

Well, we still don't know who is the father of Huey, Dewey, and Louie. We do know that they are the sons of Donald's twin sister, Della. Likewise, while we do know the April, May, and June are the daughters of Daisy's sister, we don't know the names of their parents at all.

Personally, I would disagree with the idea that Goofy's wife would be ashamed to admit it. Yes, Goofy might not be what most folks consider "prime husband material", let's face it, the fellow is true-blue loyal to his friends and family, and has a heart of pure gold.

I'm sure that Bill was just joking, and giving a slightly evasive answer. ;)

If I were to guess, I would think that Goofy's wife is perhaps deceased. Or possibly she just does not want to be in the spotlight.

I thought Goofy and his wife--saw her name on her somewhere--were divorced.

And since ducks tend not to be monogamous as are geese, who knows who the father(s) of April, May and June is/are?

You know, going into the history of Disney characters who have one or both parents six feet under, it isn't too far fetched to think that Goofy's wife is dead. *shrugs*

Definitely not far fetched for an observant nine year old to pick up on that trend and think that, either.

If you've read enough fairy tales, you'll notice it's a rare story that has the main character's parents alive. The history of fairy tales was a reflection of the reality of the Middle Ages, when they were created, or before. And it was usually mothers who died, because of the high maternal death rate. In fact, a few years ago AARP compared life in the U.S. 100 years ago with the present; did you know that one-half of all children born in 1900-1910 didn't live to see their fifth birthday? If there are any old cemeteries near you, check them out. Chances are you'll see about as many children's and infant's graves as you find adults. Life was really tough until the advent of antibiotics in the mid-1940s.

My friends and I actually sat down one day and made a list of Disney characters who had both parents alive. It consisted of YOUNG Simba, Mulan, Hercules (who had TWO sets of parents!! Lucky duck), just to name a few. It was a pretty short list, actually. That's not too hard to believe.

That is true, Disney tends to not like parents, lol. It's either the mother the father or both....

That's not just Disney. That's a large subset of children's stories, even modern ones (Harry Potter, The kids in a Series of Unfortunate Events, James and the Giant Peach, Lyra Belacqua from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trillogy.) It just makes for better plot if the child hero is left to fend for himself.
