I remember we had a picture book about him; it was such a kick reading it, especially the one part where a raccoon had climbed up a tree, and rather than shoot it, Davey Crockett just grinned at it, until finally the raccoon said, "I'll come down, Davey."

Remember that one Peanuts comic strip that had Charlie Brown and Schroeder asking Sherman, "Whatever happened to Davey Crockett?" At the time, the answer was he died at the Alamo--or was that Daniel Boone? No, wait, there's a joke about the song--if Daniel Boone was "killed in a bar when he was only three" (misheard lyrics--"killed him a b'ar [bear] when he was only three"), then who was that at the Alamo?

But he done good for someone his age.

I heard of Parker's passing at a wine dinner that featured one of his wines. The sad news was shared, and we all lifted a glass of Fess' best in salute to "The Madman of Santa Ynez Valley".

For another salute, I offer this:

Oh, Zazu, what a story.

That makes me thinkof this song- which is very, very significant to me for many reasons, especially reminding me of a life-changing trip I took last summer (you know the one).

"Since it fell into my lot
that I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
goodnight, and joy be to you all."

DLR Cast tv has been airing a fine tribute to Fess Parker. See & learn new facts everytime I go to lunch. I'd forgotten Fess had gotten a window Dec. 15, 04. All the times I've worked FrontierLand & never noticed. Must go over & see Fess' window. RIP
