I think Mapo's point here is we have had a recent strand of threads where there are guests telling CMs that they are wrong about things that they obviously are not. Maybe not enough to classify them as stupids, but enough to annoy me and I'm not cast.Zazu wrote:3. The whole concept that the world divides into CM and non-CM is false. Re: Want a CM only Forum?
Hmmm, a tough call. While I can see CMs wanting to have an area where they don't have to worry about SGs coming in, a sort of "virtual employee's only break room", I don't think it is entirely necessary. I also fear that some of the best stories would only get posted there, and the rest of the boards would suffer from such a loss. I think that, yes, occasionally, we are going to get someone suffering from intellectual deficiency post complaints unwarranted complaints here. However, from what I've seen, the regulars are quick to point out the SG's lapses in logic, common sense, and manners. "We've got your back", as the young folks like to say these days. I'm not putting in an official "vote" for this poll, though, as I think that should be done by those who have been here longer than I.

Re: Want a CM only Forum?
I think it is clear the admins here do not want to deal with that, seems like if someone wants to start up a new forum they could do that, but as Zazu and others pointed out, they tend not to be very successful. I know, I am hosting one that gets almost zero traffic.

I feel that, if one does not want to listen to guests, all one has to do is read the left profile tab, with the Status field. I'm a Former, but I still relate to Currents' issues, and I still do understand: "been there, done that."
Re: Want a CM only Forum?
I voted Dunno, because that was the closest option there was to No. I thought the threads Cast Communications and The Break Room were for that purpose.
Listen, when you've lived as long as I have, you realize there are always going to be people you don't agree with, and people who won't agree with you. That's life. The harder you try to exclude someone or a group of people, the harder they will try to get into the forbidden zone. And as usual, Zazu has nailed the problems with this issue on the head. But if I remember right, he's in my age group. There are advantages to being old(er) and I'm not talking about senior discounts. :D: You really do get a wider perspective on things after you pass your fourth and fifth decades of life.
Granted, there are also advantages to being young, like fresher ideas as well as having the drive to put them into practice, so please don't accuse me of age-bashing.

CujoSR wrote:Well here's my opinion on the matter, and it carries some weight. We (Polar and I) made a decision early on in the development of SGT to allow anyone to come and visit us and chime in on the topic at hand. I never wanted a situation like at Hasbeens where there is very little traffic and nobody around to participate in the discussion. There it also the thought of the Haves and the Have nots. If you weren't a CM and knew about this forum wouldn't you be dissuaded from ever coming back? I certainly would be. And think about all the extra work the SGT Team and Myself would have to put in to verify and update statuses for over 4,000 members (granted nowhere near that amount would apply, but you get the drift). Lastly, how in the hell would we verify anybody's status in the first place? Disney isn't going to give me access to the employee database and neither would any other theme park. We could go with the old Hasbeens model (verification by a current member) but then we get back to the haves and the have nots.
In conclusion. Not gonna happen. No way. No how.
I voted yes because I would like to see one, but there's no way to make it happen here on SGT. There's no way for the reasons the admins point out.Zazu wrote:I have to vote "no" on this proposal. My reasons include:
1. No damn way to make it happen. We haven't got the ability to verify employment, and wouldn't take it if it were offered.
2. This whole site is a no-holds-barred area. There aren't any off-topic subjects, nothing we should hold back from discussion except for a few security and safety issues that should be obvious to CMs with a room-temperature IQ. Thus there's no need for a private room to discuss "secret" issues.
3. The whole concept that the world divides into CM and non-CM is false. The world divides into Stupid and Not Stupid. We've had a few Stupids show up here, and when they wouldn't behave, they were removed.
4. There are cast-only forums on the net. Hasbeens is one, though it does cost money to join and there's not much activity there. There may be others, and I would encourage folks who know of them to post notice of them here not more than once per year.
5. While I'm glad to moderate between Stupid and Not Stupid, I'm not at all interested in moderating between CM and non-CM. Anybody who thinks that's a useful division is probably either Stupid or drifting that way.
6. We tried this once. We set up a forum that was limited to monorail cast. It hasn't been used. At all. I think it's time to take it down, or perhaps leave it as an object lesson.
The original purpose of SGT was to provide a place for CMs to let off steam and laugh about the Stupids we have to deal with. We let non-cast join so they could see the problem from our side and perhaps avoid being Stupids themselves. This has worked very well for us, and the vibrant community we now have in the Break Room -- which has grown much faster than the stupid posts -- shows this was a good call.
Dividing our little group into the holy and the less-holy doesn't strike me as an improvement.

I voted Yes to this.. but my reason is a little more complicated then what most have expressed. Zazu. i understand what you are saying but look at this way.. what if you where sitting at the break room of Team Toaster and all of the sudden a tour group came in... wouldnt you have to now beome on stage zazu rather then the off stage Iago that are at heart!!!
All kiddig aside... their is times that i have something to discuss that I cant just because that it may or may not break the magic in multiple ways.
Even if this doesnt happen here.. i am sure that even a certin web hosting provider on here can make it happen.... nudge. ndge..

Re: Want a CM only Forum?
Would some of you guys be up for a smaller off-the-record general CM forum separate from SGT? I can throw one together with not much effort, and we can make people vouch for someone for them to be a member. Or, what if it was a bit more than a forum and had some other features too?Doctor McKey wrote:Even if this doesnt happen here.. i am sure that even a certin web hosting provider on here can make it happen.... nudge. ndge..
Ktulu: I think the problem with your forum is it is for a very specific group of people.

Re: Want a CM only Forum?
To the admins: I appreciate your feedback and see how it would be a lot of work for ya'll to admin.
Zazu, I do not think I am (or any cast members here) are holier than non cast. I just have hit my limit on my patience with some of the commentary of late. Some of it has been hitting me personally like Board X or Y comments. I was hoping to not find that feeling here at SGT. This is not just the monorail painting issue, but has been growing over the past few months.
The small sample we have as of this writing indicates that there are those who are torn.
I should have been more clear in stating that if someone was a cast member in relation to the impact of the monorail accident they would probably be affected quite differently than a non cast member. Or if they were actually present that person would have a different view than those who were not. And so on...
I wanted to see if I was the only cast member who has been feeling the need to get 'backstage' to let my hair down and chat. These preliminary numbers indicate that there are others feeling the same as myself.
I also think that if something like that will occur (outside of SGT, obviously) that those interested can discuss it via PM or outside email.
Since I do not know how to 'turn off' the poll, I am going to ask the admin team to close this thread to further posting and voting.

Isn't this whole site a place for CM to be "off stage"?
