I got the check for this month's rent--with the word "final" written on it next to January rent. My landlady is still working on her English, but her brother came by and I explained it to him, he said don't worry.
I signed up for work through care.com, listing housekeeping, pet care, and elder care as my services, but I haven't had anyone offer a job to me, and those that are available are a bit far. I checked USAJobs.gov, and they're taking applications for a pool to be drawn from; anyway, the nearest post is Camp Pendleton, two hours + by bus. I really wish they hadn't shut down El Toro MCAS.... that would be easier to get to.
Churchy tried to call me this morning, but it went to voicemail on my phone, and I messed up trying to save it. Anyone know how to use the speed dial feature on a TracFone? I just emailed her. She's the only Laurie I know who has my phone number. I was in a noisy area, and the message quality was poor. We'll see what comes of the email.
Just thought I'd keep y'all up to date.

Take AMTRAK down to Oceanside. Abt 22 min. from S A. Always USMs @ depot who will take you to Pendleton's back gate or front gate. After you've riden the train a few weeks the conductors get to know & if they like you they'll let you ride free. Guarantee you!!felinefan wrote:I checked USAJobs.gov, and they're taking applications for a pool to be drawn from; anyway, the nearest post is Camp Pendleton, two hours + by bus.

When I gave my January rent to my landlady, I told her what happened as best I could with her limited English, but I had to wait until her husband came home from work. He told me I needed to become independent, to get a driver's license and a car. I agreed; there have been too many jobs I've missed out on because I had no car.
I've applied at the Chick-Fil-A down the street; hope they contact me soon.
But the thing with government work is, if they say they are just taking applications for a pool, it could be years before they got around to me. I don't have any preference points because I'm not a veteran, or the widow or dependent of one, nor am I a displaced Federal or State worker; the jobs go to those first.
I'm doing my best to stay brave; last night on the news, I heard the Governator say in reference to more budget cuts, that if he hesitated over every change he'd made in his life, he'd still be yodeling in Austria. :D: That's something to think about.
I checked the DPSS site; they calculate I'd be eligible for $190-$200 in food stamps, but that's just an estimate. Of course, that can only get food for me, can't buy cat food with that. But the Section 8 program (Housing Choice Voucher) appears to be at a standstill; it says the waiting list has been closed, no more applications are being accepted. Anybody who knows differant, give me a buzz.

Update--my landlady managed to pay the owner of the house $400 for my room for February, but I have to be out by March. I'm applying for live-in housekeeper jobs on care.com, but so far no responses leading to a job. I checked resources around here, but the housing authority closed their waiting list for rental assistance in 2005, and aren't taking anymore applications. I went to Share Ourselves yesterday, but you have to be there at like 6:30 a.m. to get a spot in line, because whether they're handing out food or financial assistance, the doors for that close at 8 a.m. And you have to have proof of need, and bring the documentation with you. I'm not on a lease, so that's out--and the owner wants me out, anyway. I only have so many one day bus passes, and I'm trying to save those for my appointments to the research center--the current study I'm in goes on until December, and they have me coming in every month.
Mainstreeter suggested Our Lady of Guadalupe, but there's two churches by that name, neither have a website or an ad in the phone book stating they have assistance programs. I like to know this stuff before I go. My landlady didn't say what day in March I have to be out, and my next appointment is the 4th. I seriously doubt shelters allow pets, and no, none of the people I know can take Tripod. They can't even take me. And the way things are, the shelters are probably full, anyway.
I wish my computer was working so I wouldn't have to come to the library; then I'd have more time to look for work, etc.. I put in the new hard drive, but trying to get a set of recovery disks from the HP site is murder. Besides, the library won't let you download software. My computer didn't come with a set of either boot or recovery disks, and the one time I tried to make them it didn't work.
Any more suggestions?
