It always seems that the community theatre world is where some of the nastiest accidents come from. Directors with delusions of grandeur and no one to tell them NO. That job usually falls to the TD or production manager. Or the steward in a union situation. Unfortunately, enthusiasm and naivety cannot make up for a lack of resources, experience and money.Mayonnaise wrote:But I'm in volunteer community theater, so it's not like I'm getting paid or not paid based on this stuff anyhow

I was about say that I'd never had any dangerous experiences, but then I remembered that community theater was where I learned to eat fire, without any professional assistance or expert supervision of any kind. Great fun!!!delsdad wrote:It always seems that the community theatre world is where some of the nastiest accidents come from. Directors with delusions of grandeur and no one to tell them NO. Every time we did a line shift at my high school it was a dangerous situation. We weren't allowed to have ea loading bridge because "they're dangerous." They somehow decided that a random student would be able to get up there and drop weights, which indeed would be a dangerous situation, but not nearly as likely as a failed line shift. The summer before I started there they had someone want to rent the stage(a fairly common occurrence for this stage) and a line shift was needed. No one from the crew(who knew how to do line shifts as safely as possible) were there, but one of the people with the rental wanted the shift done right then. What do they do? That's right, they just started removing weights. Needless to say it didn't end well and that entire line was out of commission for most of the year, at least through December when we really needed it fixed so we could use it in Les Miserables(this is also the show where we had no light board until the day before we opened, but that's another story).
