I am guessing that this is a Southern White Rhino. Several years back, the San Diego Wild Animal Park said that there were less than a dozen Northern White Rhinos left in the world-they had a couple, but all attempts at reproduction have failed :(

I will be your guide for this magical journey into the movies. It's the perfect job for me, because I love movies! Is everybody ready? Great, because it's showtime. Ready when you are, CB!

Yeah, have seen baby rhinos at WAP- IIRC,one liked to charge different objects in its' pen and they had named it "Crash". Very Cute when they are so small ;)GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:wait till they have video of that little guy doing the "baby animal romp" they like to run around and it seems like every step they take is a bounce.

Re: New Cast Member joins the Kilimanjaro Safaris
Is there a time when they name the baby? Or are they just having difficulty coming up with a name?
Re: New Cast Member joins the Kilimanjaro Safaris
Yes, they are Southern Whites. Nande and Hasani, two others born at DAK, were shipped 'home' to Uganda in 2006 as part of the effort to rebuild the wild population. There are no White Rhino left in the wild in that region. In June 2009, Nande birthed the first rhino calf to be born in Uganda in nearly 30 years! His name is Obama.
Naming captive born babies can be a while. It often requires a consensus, and since a committee is the only animal with a dozen mouths and only one brain... I think one of the quickest name announcements I've seen was the male calf born during Bike Week. He was promptly name Harley.
Sadly someday these stalled and pampered darlings may be the only Rhinos left on the planet. Although the Southern White fares better than some, they are not out of danger. The International Rhino Foundation reported today that poachers have shot the last two white rhinos in Zambia, killing one, removing its horn, and wounding the other. The injured male is the last to survive.
As far as the Northern go, there are last-ditch efforts underway to save the species - four, which comprises half the known surviving animals, were shipped from the Czech Republic to Kenya in December 2009. Barring the discovery of unknown wild population, they are the last hops, and many feel it is already too late to save the species.
