Actually, it's funny you should mention that...

Disney filed a patent *decades* ago for a cordless animatronic that could walk around within a pre-determined area. The idea of the patent was that the floor was full of switchable electromagnets, and the feet of the AA were metal. While one foot was moving to take a step, the other was held firmly in place by the local magnets around its other foot. Then the next foot would get magnetized and the first would be turned off. This would allow the AA to "walk" across the room.

It was also mentioned in the patent that control signals could possibly be relayed to the AA through the floor.
