I remember one year when I was in 3rd grade, getting on the school bus with my sisters, and across the aisle I saw this slightly older boy slipping a bandage on and off the tip of one finger, looking at it remorsefully. My older sister explained he'd been playing with fireworks during the Fourth of July, and one had gone off in his hand, taking the tip of his finger with it. Actually, I was always a pretty safety-conscious kid, I didn't get too banged up growing up. Although frankly, the way I used to ride my bike, it's a miracle I'm still here.

Really, the way things are now, with all this super-cleanliness and stuff, no wonder there's supergerms now. Granted, most of us are alive today because a doctor or midwife washed their hands before or after delivering one of our ancestors, or some other reason, and soap and water are the single greatest reason more people are alive today. The second reason would be vaccinations. I think when we banged and scraped our knees and elbows, we kind of innoculated ourselves with germs our immune systems could defend us from. Now, our immune systems have most of their work done for them, and so we end up with some way-out infections and diseases. There's a price to pay for overvigilance.

Anyone remember Discovery Zone, those cool, very padded indoor playgrounds? One time my wife and I were taking our small boys to some party there, and I was sitting watching them play with all this padding everywhere... and then it dawned on me: What did we have to play on when we were kids?

Monkey bars over concrete.

That's when I decided that our collective parents didn't love our generation as much as we love our kids. :D:

At least we were 'outside' playing instead of getting our brains fried playing video games. (or playing on the computer all day :rolleyes :)

I remember the tall slide in the playgound at grade school had a bar across the top that you could do a forward sommersault before goind down the slide.

Never thought about going off slightly to one side and falling the 8 feet to the pavement!

Hi all, it's been awhile since I last posted but I've been lurking/reading somewhat regularly. The timing of reading this thread is right on for me. We just went to Disneyland over the holidays and took my 3 yr ols niece to Minnie's and Mickey's houses over in Toontown and we got to meet both of the big cheeses! I always love meeting the characters and truly believe in the magic<hello that's why I'm an AP lol>. But the reaction and look on my niece's face when we were escorted into Mickey's dressing room was priceless and I'm so glad my mom and I were there to see it. Unfortunately her parents were at home with her 1 week old new sister so they didn't make this trip but we got some great pics and the official Disney photopass girls got a priceless shot of her just as she turned the corner and saw Mickey waiting for her! BTW we also got a awesome family photo w/ Minnie too. As always thanks a million to all who make it all happen. BTW we have been lucky enough that we haven't had any naysayers within our earshot or my niece's :D <okay the smilies aren't working for me for some reason??>

Quite new here. . .but I volunteer with an animal rescue group. Over the holidays we do pet pictures at Petsmart. Santa always gets quite hot, so he takes breaks. I was chatting with a Santa helper about the costume when I realized there was a little girl staring at us, wide-eyed. Santa helper realized it too. Luckily, the conversation was early enough for us to divert and we started discussing costuming and elves and working for Santa. We had quite a conversation about flying to and from the North Pole and the best connections thru' Fairbanks, along with what benefits Santa gives his human workers and what job conditions were like, vacation time, possible openings in his IT department next year. . .

The little girls' eyes kept getting wider and wider and wider. I'm sure she told her parents that she'd met someone who works for Santa and flies in and out of the North Pole. . .she'll probably believe until she's 40!
