See, I'm fat. I don't want to be fat anymore. I've been watching my calories. I started at 321 and I'm down to 293.4. I want to keep that trend going, so I had to choose between food and booze.

Congrats Ktulu on your loss. I know how hard it is to take off weight. I myself started at 345 and dropped to 290 over a year before I leveled off. I have gained 5 pounds back after taking a break for about a year (I'm in a maintenance mode right now) and now restarting in earnest to see if I can take another 50 off.

Stick with it.

Thanks, it is hard, but I'm going to keep pressing on! Make sure you do the same! 345 to 290 is awesome! Keep us updated on your progress. I'm using sparkpeople.com to keep track of my calories and exercise, good website!

And to keep this on topic, there was no smoke in my backyard, but it did rain again.

Your mantra should be Eat Less, Move More. Carbohydrates are where the energy comes from to add weight but you can't cut them out completely. Otherwise, you'll bonk. Eat food that's made up of complex carbs like pasta. They take longer to digest into glucose so you get a longer energy spread. SUGAR IS DEATH!! That includes any type of soft drink. Sugar is simple carbs that, unless you're in the middle of intense exercise, converts to fat very fast.

You need to exercise for at least an hour every day. It's tough but ya gotta do it. Keep your heart rate below 75% of max (220 - age = max heart rate). That's the range where fat is burned. If you get above 75%, you go anaerobic and you'll burn the glucose in your liver. There's not much there so the bonk comes pretty fast. If you can exercise every day your body will actually start to burn fat in anticipation.

A friend that had been overweight for years started drinking a large glass of water before every meal. It took up room in his stomach so he ate less food. Plus, you're getting hydrated.

There’s a book by Chris Carmichael titled Food for Fitness. It’s aimed at athletes but has some good info on weight loss.

Good luck on your program!

Ah, no it's totally cool! I knew you were being sarcastic, I'm happy with my loss so far and don't mind sharing. Plus support from peeps is always a good thing.

Hobie, my mantra is lower caloric intake and MOVE more. Since my job is behind a keyboard all day I try and do things like park further away, take the escalator instead of elevator and walk up the escalator, not just stand there. I'm also on my exercise bike for at least 30 minutes a day right now keeping my heart rate at the 'optimal' rate for burning the most calories, I could probably ride for an hour but my ass starts to hurt and go numb. I need to replace the seat or sell this bike and get a recumbent style bike. My wife and I have a friend who is a Physcian's Assistant and did the same thing to lose her weight. It didn't go on overnight, so I know it's not going to come off overnight.

I do my best to drink at least 8 cups of water a day, and drink lots of water at meal times. We did low carb for 2 weeks to kick off the diet, but both agreed that it was not healthy so we switched to the low calorie diet with exercise. It's actually not bad, right now I can have between 2250-2600 calories, which if you eat the right things is not bad at all!

Ktulu,

Sounds like you’ve got a good program going. It does take time but it’s all worth it in the end

Get some bike shorts that have a padded crotch. They will REALLY make a difference. http://www.performancebike.com always has sales. You'll see a big difference in weight loss, resistance to disease and endurance if you start riding a road bike. It’s not boring either. Try to ride at least an hour a day. Mix in the flats with some moderate hills to start. As you get better, start doing some 30 second sprints. Oh yeah, WEAR A HELMET!!! I can give you the long story if you’d like but I'd probably be a veg if I hadn't been wearing one two years ago.

I'll check them out! I need to drop some lbs to be able to get back on my bike, or I need to buy some new wheels :/ I love to ride, when I was just out of high school I used to ride on some trails where I grew up at a local park (they were setup for bikers, runners, walkers), it was through some woods, so it was shaded and the scenery was nice. Right now I ride in my living room with the TV going to distract me from the timer ticking by in front of me. Once I can get back outside I'll probably end up riding longer, and I'll pick up a helmet! Thanks for the tip on the shorts, I'm going to look at them right now.

Oh, still no smoke in my backyard, but it did rain again last night. I'm wondering if this is Texas or Seattle!

In the dead of winter I'd use rollers in the garage to ride. I'd have the door open with Metallica cranked up to keep from getting bored. The neighbors truely thought I was crazy. :animal:
