My extended family visited WDW this May. For the first time I needed a GAC. My family saw how miserable I was trying to tour without a GAC, so I thought that they would behave.
In the FP line for Soarin as we approach merge. I was mostly ignoring the conversation and focusing on making it through the queue and I hear behind me in a booming voice..."We don't need to stand in line, because we have YOU! You know what to say to get one of those cards!"
I heard the same thing, with different phrasing again and again on the trip. That we didn't need to stand in line because I was special. Because I had a GAC!
Now, I did have a GAC, and I wasn't trying to hide it - but really, do you really need to yell about it everytime I use it? I already felt bad enough about needing one, I didn't need other people glaring at me.
"Can you leave that GAC with us when you go back to the house to rest?" Um. No.
With a GAC I managed to ride 50% fewer rides than I did when I didn't need a GAC, because I just didn't have the endurance. Recently I heard that the same family member was saying "We won't need to stand in any lines on our next trip - because she'll have a GAC!" I'm not sure that a GAC is worth the embarrassment.
(oh, I, I'm dawn. I lurk here. I'll go back to that now.)

Aw, Ive had family members say that before when my sister was injured. They automatically went to the "WE CAN GO IN FAST LINES NOW YAY!" When my sister seriously hurt her ankle...Its just a mentality of "everyone else gets this break, now its MY turn!"
I just sort of stood off to the side pretending I didnt know my family while they discussed it.

Next time get the GAC with a 'cloaking' device. That way you can 'disappear',and leave your 'loved ones' behind.
(I wonder if they sell a day pass like that?)

I would flat out tell them that we were there as a group to have fun. That if they only see me as an easy way to ride rides then I am out of there. They were using you to get something. Users are abusers who are losers.
The GAC is a great tool for those of us who are disabled or for those who are short term incapacitated. The ride industry is working to make new ride lines wide enough for the disabled thus making the disabled wait in line. There are very few guests who need to get in and out quick on rides but most guests do not need that priviledge.
You just got to learn to ditch losers or put your foot down.

Wow, that sucks. Hope you have at least one reasonable family member in the group you can pull aside and explain this to, so he/she can keep the others in check. You shouldn't have to deal with this headache, too.dawn wrote:I'm not sure that a GAC is worth the embarrassment.

Eh, it wasn't so much that, actually. The family member was my dad, who will happily stand in a 45 minute line for a 90 second ride so that he can ride with his grandkid. My interpretation was actually that he was uncomfortable using the gac so he felt the need to talk about it and make jokes that were in bad taste. If he says it about our group first, then no one else is going to say it. When I have some distance from the embarrassment I realize it's because he has very, very poor social skills and doesn't realize that he's making an idiot of himself.mechurchlady wrote:I would flat out tell them that we were there as a group to have fun. It's just that I dislike him making people around us think that you can get a GAC by knowing what to say, or what symptoms to mimic or whatever. It just encourages people to do research and find out what the "magic words" are. It also encourages resentment among guests who otherwise wouldn't have any idea that I was using a GAC.
I have no idea what the motivation for his recent comment (that they won't have to stand in line for the upcoming trip, due to a GAC) but I'm going to put a charitable face on it and say that maybe he's trying to set his expectations and get his rude comments out of his system before we get there. ]

Oh, I agree, and if they'd actually been trying to get expedited access through me I wouldn't have let them join me. My niece was the only one who tried to influence me to get her onto a ride faster, and she's 4, so we treated it as a learning experience. My impression is that other than one "extra" trip on Peter Pan for my niece, our group as a whole rode about the same to slightly fewer rides/hour than we did on the trip previous.
I'm not sure yet how I'll handle our upcoming trip - but it certainly won't be to toddle along after my group getting in line for the rides they request.
