First of all, DO NOT tell them why you left Knott's, and ESPECIALLY not that you were fired. Just say that you seperated from the company voluntarily. Legally, all they are allowed to do is confirm that you were employeed by the company during the dates you give them. Any company that tells another prospective employer any more information than that is in violation of employment laws. I left Knott's under the same circumstances, and have made it a point NEVER to say I was fired.

Second, I'm not sure if this is still the case, but as of the last time I worked at Disney, there was a freeze on hiring of new Security Officers. You should probably think of at least two other departments you'd like to work in as backups.

Since the law prohibiting a company from saying anything beyond you worked there, HR professionals have developed a unwritten code to pass info on to a new company. But, as long as you didn't burn down a building or piss on your manager's desk you should be safe.

Don't ever volunteer negative info in an interview. Remember the old saying about how do fish get caught? They open their mouth.

Put your best foot forward, wear a suit, ask good questions and, if you can, turn the interview around so you're interviewing them.

I like that fish quote, and the interview advice. As to why you left you can say things like 'other opportunities' but that is certainly code! I think 'my parents needed me to help them settle into a home' or something like that tugs at heart strings.

I'm always suspicious when people don't list a good reason for leaving prior employment.

Or, you can be refreshingly honest. I told the interviewers at my last company that the previous company and I had gone our separate ways because the senior management were a bunch of crooks. And stupid too.

It did help that I had worked for the CEO of the new company. When the hiring manager saw he was a reference I got hired on the spot.

You were fired for pointing out safety violations?!? Isn't that against the law?

Good thing we don't go to Knott's unless we get comp tickets. Think maybe we'll give away said comps next time...

What if I say I quit USH because of a variety of sucky things that happened?
Those sucky things were.... a coworker hacking into my email and sending out libel emails to the company with my email address. Some one going in my bag and stealing my i Pod and a coworker verbally harassing me, after my quirkiness got to him and he blew up at me.

Would that make me look like trouble? Or not. Plus, it was almost 3 yearsa ago I quit.

Or should I say that I was offered a job at my alma mater so I took that instead.
{even though I was offered the job after I quit}

Go with the Alma Mater story, and the less said the better.
