Woo hoo! Past step one...

Post by BRWombat » Mon Apr 09, 2007 3:34 pm

Please forgive me this bit of non-Disney self-congratulation, but I've enjoyed reading when others have interviewed or auditioned for various roles, so I couldn't resist sharing this news. I've been sitting in on rehearsals for The Vocal Majority, an awesome men's chorus (the reigning international gold-medal champion chorus, in fact, a feat they've accomplished an unparalleled eleven times, including the last ten times in a row that they've competed!). And... last Thursday I took the plunge and auditioned. It was the most challenging audition I've ever been a part of (and one which I'm told maybe 1 in 5 pass on the first try) -- but I passed!

Passing the audition is just the first step of a lengthy process. I go to be interviewed by their board of directors tonight. Assuming they approve me, I'll be a member of the group officially, but I'll have to spend the next many weeks/months learning their entire repertoire, including choreography, and pass yet another audition before I am certified to perform with the group in public. But I'm on my way!!! :D:

Woo! I had a friend who was in the Vocal Majority. He was a good guy until he cheated on his fiance and knocked up the girl he was boning on the side.

Best of luck to you! Let me know if you make it, I'll try and make a show and heckle you.

Thanks all!!!

Well, I passed my interview last night and the Board approved me. So, I am officially a member now. That's the good news. Except now I'm feeling like a kid who asked for a pet elephant and is actually given one -- as in, "What have I gotten myself into???" I've got a LOT of work ahead of me before I can perform with them, and I've switched from being a guest who can attend rehearsals at my convenience to a member expected to be at every one. It's a bit overwhelming. Plus they are encouraging me to qualify before they perform at the national convention in Denver in the first week of July, so the pressure's on!

One thing about the group made me laugh. I knew when I joined I'd be considered a "rookie" for a while, and have extra set up/tear down responsibilities. What I didn't know until last night was how long I'd be a rookie. I thought maybe until I passed the final audition, or maybe for a full year. Wrong. The group is so accustomed to winning the international gold medal every three years that new members are rookies until they "get their own gold medal" -- in other words, be a part of the group when they next win (I was specifically told it doesn't count if I just steal someone else's :) ). So it looks like I'm a rookie until the summer of 2009. :D:

Oh, and ktulu, I'd be honored to have you heckle me anytime.

Congrats!

I see rehearsal is at the Sammons center. My company used to have their Christmas parties there. I work very close by, I may have to come by sometime.

I love their outfits. Does the director always go around poking people?

I think you will fit in well with them, I loved listening to their samples of their music.

Thankfully those are just pics from their most recent Christmas show, Churchy. Usually they are in some pretty sharp looking tuxes.

Come on by, ktulu! The rehearsals are always open to anyone, 7:00 - 10:30 on Thursday evenings.

I'm in! I have passed my Final Performance Qualification with The Vocal Majority Chorus (after having passed separate Music (vocal) and Choreography reviews). Last night I was presented with my cufflinks and bolo tie for my performance tuxedo, meaning I am officially "riser qualified" and can perform in public with the group.

I'm not ashamed to say it was a lot of work, and I thought the two months it took me was a long time, but it turns out it's not. In fact, I understand one other rookie who qualified with me last night has been working at it for over 9 months.

My debut with the group will be onstage at the Pepsi Center in Denver, before a crowd of 10,000+, on Friday July 6. Should be fun!

Congrats! I know peeps in Denver, I'll see if anyone is going so they can heckle you ;)

Seriously, I know how much work it is, so congrats again! Maybe I'll gather up the family and try and see a performance here in the Big D.
