many years ago i worked a 2nd job at night in McDonalds. a customer came in and started to place his order. i want a hamburger cheeseburger. i asked do you want a hamburger or cheeseburger. yes, i want a hamburger cheeseburger. i asked again, do you want it with or without cheese? he started to get annoyed, i want a hamburger cheeseburger!, at that point i turned to the mgr and said you find out, as i was started to laugh, wrong, but it was funny. then the customer yelled i want a hamburger cheeseburger and why is she laughing at me? and on the other side of hamburger land, years before that another 2nd job at a burger king. a customer wanted a whopper jr. plain. (note: a whopper jr and hamburger is the same size piece of meat), i said you mean you just want a burger plain. NO, i want a whopper jr plain. i explained it's a hamburger, the same. he said i WANT a whopper jr plain, so i ordered a whopper jr plain and charged him twice the amount, ha ha. and he paid for it!

You know, both your experience and this one belong in the "Are guests getting dumber" thread

Last night, I had stopped at the Boardwalk and dropped off a bunch of guests. A family comes up to the door and asks "Is this the bus to the Magic Kingdom?" I look up at the Marquee controller, Yup, it still said Magic Kingdom.

So I said "What does the marquee say?" They replied Magic Kingdom. So I said, Sorry, going to Epcot.

They looked dumbfounded and started to walk away! I finally gave in and told them that I would take them to MK as a favor to them.

Once had a guest ask me if they were ALLOWED to watch Wishes...

That and the usual guest who points to our steam engine locomotive and ask if that's the monorail...

Oh, and the lovely one. "How do I get out of the park?" (Magic Kingdom). How do these people get in? Surely they all don't use the tunnels. >_<

I always say my order and end it with, "And that's all I want," or "That is everyone." Inevitably they ask if I want fries (or something else). Yes, I know they are trained to say that, but show that you are actually LISTENING to the customer and have a bit of respect for their intelligence. I always have to bite my tongue to not snap back, "I SAID that is all I want. Were you listening?"

Ah yes, suggestive sales. Hated that when I worked for Revco years ago. Especially if it was for some obscure item. There were also secret shoppers who were asked if the pharmacist or staff suggested buying product X. We'd get reports on those who did not.

Ah, yes, secret shoppers! When I lived in Illinois, I used to secret shop for a firm that did McDonalds and Arby's among others. One of the tasks was using the restroom, and I still carry emotional scars from the Arby's that had its restroom outside ala a gas station (and with the same level of cleanliness) and the McDonalds with half the bathroom ceiling down and an inch of water on the floor. UGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I think we're just getting smarter. We're learning their tricks and preparing for what might come our way. . .

Getting angry over stupidity? I do that all the time Zazu and you haven't heard any SWAT being called to the Studios have you? And you all know how I get some times.

Case in point of the "Us getting smarter idea":
Disney knew that Heelies would one day rule the world years before they came to power. . . How did we prepare for this? Animal Kingdom. . .
Name me one piece of pathway that is flat and smooth (Save a few shops and queue lines). . . Yep didn't think so.

And while AK and I celebrated our birthdays yesterday with the Yeti, we all sat back and watched as the world gave us gifts of children trying to stay balanced on their heelies, but alas, could not.

there is no way that i have become hardened. if anything, i have become more sympathetic. Before i entered the theme park world, i never noticed my dad being irate at people working at their jobs. After about a month i realized that my dad gave these hard workers too much aof a hard time. So now i always see things from the side of the fast tood employee working the register or the sales person in the eyeglass store. When dad complains, i help the worker and try to calm my dad down. If i had not worked in parks, i never would have noticed that.
