OT: Video game systems

Post by Dante101 » Wed Nov 19, 2003 12:01 pm

I'm thinking of buying a video game system, but don't know the differences between Playstation 2, X-box and Game Cube.

The games I'm interested in are available on all three systems; and I'm not interested in playing DVDs or burning CDs or any of the other extras that one or more of the systems offers.

I just want the system that will give me the best performance, best graphics, etc. Are they all pretty much the same in that respect? Or is one of them far above the others?

Buy an Atari 2600. :P

Okay well, from what I've heard/seen, the GameCube looks pretty damn good. And it has Rouge Squadron 3. :D But XBox can go online, and you can play games like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 online with other people. And I'm also pretty sure you can play online with PS2..but the graphics aren't that great on PS2 IMO. I'd either get an XBox or GameCube... XBox has pretty great graphics, and so does the GameCube, and it doesn't hurt that the GameCube is on sale for $99.

PS2!!!!

Pros:
Many titles to choose from.
Backwards compatability (play ps1 games).
Same Graphics as the Xbox (IT'S THE SAME TRUST ME I WORK IN ELECTRONICS).
Many of the same games as Xbox.
Better controller.
You don't have to pay for online play like Xbox.
Play DVDs right out of the box (Xbox you have to buy the remote to play DVDs).
Sony has a larger market share and more contracts with developers meaning more and better games.
Sony's Video Game Division will be around alot longer than Microsoft's.

Cons:
Halo (Xbox)
Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike (Gamecube)
Gamecube is actually a pretty cool system and you can find some great deals for $100 (I plan on getting one soon).

THIS IS NOT MY OPINION! This is the truth. IMO

"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."

"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

In my closet I have an ancient "Atari Home Computer" circa 1980. I have the "basic computer language" cartridge, as well as Q-bert and Asteroids.

Before that we had Pong - but it eventually got thrown out.

Sometime in the '90s I bought a Sega Game Gear.

I may be leaning towards the PS2. The games I'm interested in are the new Simpsons title and the Grand theft auto bundle.

Simpsons Hit and Run looks hilarious! And GTA III and Vice are both great games. I lean towards Vice more though, love the 80's feel it has.

Dude... I have all three systems in my apartment, and the PS2 definitely does not come near the XBOX for graphical quality. The biggest difference is the support the XBOX's nVidia GPU has for decent antialiasing. Go out and buy Gladius for both PS2 and XBOX and compare the two. You'll see a huge difference. Reps from LucasArts told us at both E3 and their July press day that they had to cut some visual effects from the PS2 and Gamecube releases because they couldn't maintain a good enough framerate.

I would vote very firmly for the XBOX. Plus, I prefer the S-Controller to the PS2's. IT fits in my hands a lot better. The Dualshock2 controller leaves my hands sore after an hour or so.

And while you may have to pay for XBOX live, it can link to other local XBOXes via good old cheap cat5 cabling. If you have 4 TVs, 4 XBOXes, and a hub or switch, you can play a 16-player game of HALO.
