To ROB 562, same here about the good tip upfront.Of course I'll go for the 'imports' instead of the domestics. (it's the only time I can afford them)
To SWTex, as far as the SG living in his own little hell,he/she does'nt know any better. they think it's some power play bs.I do agree about the spouse thing though.
For inkstainedpsych (may I call you ink?) 100yrs ago when I bussed/bar-backed(w/waitress) the going rate was 10%. but that may have changed now.
From what I've heard (and believe) a prominent businessman here in town, will take 20 or people out for lunch and leave a 'generous' $5.00 tip.
The story goes this man has eaten more boogers than a 4yr old.

I still remember the worst tip I ever gave, and it was some 15 years ago, but I think I was justified. I left 2 cents at the bottom of a soda glass, but, after a lengthy wait, the waiter brought me a dish I hadn't ordered and wouldn't because I considered the main ingredient inedible. My companion had finished eating by the time the s.o.b returned to "ask how everything was" (he had been awol, and no other server was in evidence). When I explained that he had brought me the wrong entree he insisted that it was indeed what I had ordered and argued the point with me. At length, acting like he was doing me a huge favour, he asked me if he could bring me something else (like what I ordered maybe? but he didn't suggest that). By this time, I just wanted to go to Mickey D's and grab a burger so I could eat something before the next ice age set in. When our hero returned with the bill, he said "the computer agrees with me. That is what you ordered." Ummm, who entered the order, Einstein? Anyway, I felt it was justified, and normally I tip well, and round up the total before calculating the tip. But arguing with me about whether or not I ordered something I don't consider food? That's gotta be the stupidest restaurant trick I ever saw.

I totally understand undertipping for lousy service. And on the flipside, I believe in overtipping for high-maintenance service. This thread made me think of my brother, who makes Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie in the Vacation movies look like a bastion of good manners. My husband and I take him out with us sometimes, and he loves to do things like order "Pig chest" (ribs) and affect a "gay" voice and mannerisms if he orders lemonade and is informed that a restaurant only has the pink variety. Sigh!! Any server who can contend with him without slugging him in the head earns a bonus tip from me. (Actually, if they DID slug him, I'd probably give an even bigger bonus!!) He still lives in Chicago, but my husband keeps threatening to bring him to Jiko with us when he comes to visit us in FL. The very idea of that gives me nightmares!!!!

NO, bring him in to Ohana instead. I've got some male server friends who would love to bring him his Pink lemonade!

LOL!!!! Better yet, I would have loved to bring him on a Disney cruise when one of our friends in particular was working on board...a total flamer who would have really put bro' in his place!!

Ironically, bro' (a truck driver) installed purple lights in his truck without having any idea what they mean...then he wondered why he was surrounded by lots of guys whenever he pulled into a truck stop. And when he found out, he still didn't remove the lights. I have the feeling he would enjoy many of the CMs at Disney World a bit too much, if you know what I mean ;)

All the more reason to bring him! LOL! Maybe after a few Lapu Lapus we could get him to do the :hula:

i've had my share of good and bad in restaurants. but the main thing that annoys me is the food server not showing up after being seated. understanding that a restaurant is busy, they are busy. but as they pass the table they should give us and acknowledgement, that they'll be back in a moment to take the order. we've sat in applebee's one time for over 20 min before anyone came over. i started to get annoyed after 5-8 min, hubby said calm down. so we waited, then about 15 min i said i'm going to find someone. (many food servers passed our table). the kids were getting antsy, and so was i. he finally said let's leave. i said let me find a manager. he said no, let's just to go Friday's. we got up, and i said go to the car i'm finding a manager. calmly i explained to mgr and mgr said i'll get someone over, i expl hubby left w/kids and doesn't want to stay.. we ended up getting four free meal tickets for our next visit. thank you for keeping us as customers.
so i don't mind waiting, as long as the server acknowledges us anddoesn't ignore.
