See we do this 'thing' at Junior Chef where we say 'let's make fish cookies!' and effectively gross the kids out. Well we recently had one little boy who yelled "YEAH! LET'S USE ARIEL!"
........................yeah.
Yesterday I looked at a kid's colored picture of mickey and noticed that the drawing had a band of red around the character's neck. I said "oh, you gave him a holiday scarf" in cheery disney-speak and he nonchalantly replied with "No, that's blood."
W..T...F?!

Yeah, that's pretty consistant with what I see at work too (The Boys and Girls Club). I have to consistantly remind them that I don't want to see pictures of guns or blood. They are the same kids who don't worry about talking back to staff.

I know the shits gonna hit the fan on this one,but blame the media, the internet, and parents on this. Weeks after 9/11 the news was telling us "If your kids are upset about the planes hitting the Twin Towers, please turn-off the TV". My thought was " Quit F-in showing it every 15 mins"

I respectfully disagree.
IMO, it's not so much of the media and the internet. It's that most parents raise their kids so that the kids do not have to experience failure.
Little League umpire calls the kid out at home. Immediately daddy runs onto the field complaining. Buffy does not make the cheerleading team. Mommy goes to see the coach and gets pissy. Coach says no. Mommy then complains to the Board of Education. Next day there is an "open" spot on the team. Kid is too short to ride ToT. Mommy complains to a manager that he "rode all day" and now this CM won't let him ride. Manager says that although he is too short, how about a free T-shirt, FPs, etc. Daddy videos his kid with Tigger. Tigger "slaps" the kid. Daddy says that Disney should "do something" even though video seems to show that his angel was doing something to Tigger. [Disney will more likely than not cave in to Daddy and comp them a few days of park admission.]
Let the kids experience failure. Kids seem to handle it better than parents these days.

I'm with Leftcoaster on this one... Sorta.
There is a thread on another board where a mother is asking for advice on how to get her son who is 1/8" too short on INDY. I was stunned to see how many "caring parents" offered insight on how to add up to 1/2" to jr. They justified this by saying they did not want their jr. to be sad on his vacation.
I think some people are setting their kids up for real failure in the real world. My business has on occasion brought me into contact with people who have never not gotten their way... A grown man who can't comprehend that he can't his heart's desire...now... It's just plain sad.
HOWEVER...
I don't think that has anything to do with kids seeming to be more violent.
This is where I disagree with my friend Darph... the media can show whatever they want (within reason certainly)... the parents should be making decisions as to what the children are watching.
I do think it's the PARENTS who are letting their children watch whatever they want for whatever reason... and if that is what LeftCoaster meant... I'm right there with ya.

OK OK. I concede,to a point. Try watching tv or going on the net w/o being bombarded with all sorts of b/s. Hell, there's a local tv ad for cable,"OK class ,why is (local/national) high-speed internet better than dial-up"? Now what teacher in her right mind would discuss the net in class? I know,Iknow it's only a commercial, but still. The little twerp who pestered Tigger, the media jumped ALL over it w/o getting facts.

I too point fingers at the parents. The media puts out those warnings so that kids don't have to be exposed to the images that are about to be shown. It's up to the parents to change the channel. Kids nowadays need to hear "No" once in a while. Too many times have kids begged their parents for money before they leave at the end of the night. And the parents give it to them more often than not. I tell the kids "No" at work, and I'm the bad cop. Fine by me.

If you see the kid again take him out! That one's gonna get movies made about him! You know the ones with half naked women running for thier lives.
"A little swordplay, now and then, keeps my mind off sheep!"
"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."
"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

I work with some pretty disturbed kids but not one of them would ever dream of drawing blood on a holiday scarf let alone Mickey. I guess I am lucky I am not with the main stream kids.

I'm a preschool teacher and every so often we get a few sick kids (luckily I dont have any this year!) they can hardly draw a picture but you can make out the guns and blood, etc.
More often than that are the lovely 3 and 4 year olds who tell you off, cussing up and down, kicking you in the knees, biting, spitting, punching... and then when you try and explain this to the parents, they look at you like "how could you say that about my precious angel..." and then they call your supervisor and make things up about you :) Such a fun cycle!
In our situation, its that the children are exposed to too much at home, they hear the arguements between mom and dad, the words used and how to use them. I just try and give as much love as I can to these kids, even if they cause me bruises and bloody noses, cuz they dont need to hear any more negativity from me.
