Abbreviated Training
I may have mentioned before the "abbreviated training" I received when I was trained for PAC on Main Street.
How abbreviated was it? Five words: "Don't worry, you'll do fine."
No information on where the ropes go, what the "cheese" was, where the positions were, or what to do if a toddler ran in front of an oncoming float. Made for some fairly stressful parades until I soaked up enough knowledge from my fellow CMs. I never did come to feel comfortable at PAC.
I had thought that was about as bad as a training program could get.
Silly me! :notallthe
Today, I received an even *briefer* training for a rather more complicated role. I've been a lobby concierge for six months, and feel reasonably competent there, but today over half the club concierge cast called in, creating something of a crisis. A manager came out to the desk, surveyed those of us on duty there, pointed a finger at me, and said (and I quote):
"You! Twelfth floor,"
and with those three little words, qualified me to handle our fussiest guests, serve food, supervise alcohol consumption, and find everything I needed on a floor I'd never been to before.
Maybe I should become a trainer. Think of all the words I could save!

What the heck is the cheese?
I probably pulled PAC 100 times in Liberty Square, Main Street must be more different than I imagined.
And I was never trained on what to do when a kid runs in front of a float, but I got to handle it about 3 times. Including once when a kid and her mother ran out in front of Fantasia, trying to cross. Only time I ever grabbed a guest, but I feel like it was worth it that time. Second worst was a kid running out to meet Ursula. Anyone who's ever seen Spectro can probably imagine how scary chasing a kid in front of those swinging tentacles is.

Hee - nothing's changed! 22 years ago, when I was being trained I was told, "don't worry, we'll never put you in the hat shop when you're new." Guess who got put in the Mad Hatter on her second day of work. Without being able to hat write. Which annoyed the poor lead to no end since I was having to interrupt her every few minutes to do names, but they were short due to a lot of call sicks and I was a warm body. At least I could ring.

There are no problems, just opportunities.
A friend was a dealer in Vegas. The unions called a strike and he got called on to help out in hotel operations. They liked what he did and eventually became the hotel manager.
Someone noticed what he was doing and he got recruited by Caesar's. Last I heard he was the hotel general manager.

Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Re: Abbreviated Training
My first day I was at Award Weiners for the WDI Preview of DCA. I was handed a fund and pointed to the nearest register. I don't even remember if the lead said anything. Took me a minute to figure out the touchscreen register. Good thing I'm a quick study!
Funny part is I don't even think I ever got paid for that day.
Going back to the beginning... I hadn't gotten any training schedule so after calling and calling (with no return calls) the scheduler I finally went in and found that she was on vacation. So I was told by someone else to go in that day. After that day I was not told to come in again till someone called. So I waited. And waited. Till I finally went to the location that worked on the WDI preview and walked into the location out of costume! The sure as hell drew some attention. I was working regular the next day.
NO Training!

"A little swordplay, now and then, keeps my mind off sheep!"
"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."
"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

That's how I learned to work the reg. at the Inn Between. I couldn't get trained at the Plaza Inn, oh no, but 10 minutes of familiarizing me with the reg. and off I went.

That's what we call the plastic thingamabobs that we put in the trolley tracks so wheels won't get stuck there.Mansion Butler wrote:What the heck is the cheese?

We call it "cheese" because when new it smells faintly of cheese and is the color of cheddar, and when it's old it smells strongly of horse piss and is the color of horse shit.
Gee, I wonder why? :horseappl

Re: Abbreviated Training
when i was odv we used to get pulled to serve at resturants.one day they were super short at coke corner so a few of us got sent there. the lead told us we would be on registers. we looked at him like he had 3 heads. after 30 seconds of training, which i think all that was said was "this is a touch screen, we sell hot dogs here"... we were on our own.
then i had to work the coffee cart, ya my training was "push button. cappuccino has a lot of foam, latte is steamed milk, mocha has chocolate, have fun!"
and finally, when i transfered to photopass during training we never really covered how to do the view station. of course my first day i was scheduled view. so i get in there and they put me at the busiest computer and say "its a touch screen have fun!" and that was it....
of course the manager came in like 30mins later saying a new girl would be working today and someone should show her the ropes. she got there, and someone actually showed her step by step.....
same with night photography, i got the 30 second lesson, others got a full lesson....
i guess i learn fast? someone must be testing me!
