Here's a crazy idea...

Post by goose » Wed Jul 26, 2006 5:16 pm

This may be really radical and crazy but I thought I would bring it up.

So, all of foods is short CM's. I hear the other departments are short people too. I don't know how bad their situation is, but ours is pretty bad. So, people are being forced to work 6 and 7 days, overtime and what not and scheduleing bitches that there is nothing they can do. They are too short on CM's.

First off, I for one do not care that we are short on people. That is not my problem. No, I will not come in for a 6th day, no I will not work overtime, (I have enough seniority to say no.) I don't care.

So, on to my radical idea...

If they are really that short on people...how about they don't open to capacity! Think about it. If you let in 60,000 people when you are short CM's of course it's going to be awful. Of course you're going to get cranky guests and overworked CM's. What if we only let in 45,000 instead, because that was all we could accomodate! Guests would be happier and CM's would be happier too.

I know this will never happen. Disney talks a lot about how important it is to make the guest experience magical. Well, how magical will the experience be when there are huge lines, for rides and huge lines for restaraunts. They don't value the guest. They value the dough.

Anyway, I can dream can't I?

Part 2: Sounds like a SUIT.

Only 1 question from this "guest".

WHO gets to be the elite 45.000, infrequent or APs???

I will agree that there is some logic in this idea. However, if this were to happen, it would seem a little obvious to me that if fewer people enter the park then that is less money coming in. Less money leads to fewer people that we can hire. The process will continue and you will end up worse off than what you started with.
I don't like the understaffing just as anybody else. We should get paid more and still have more staffing. But if things are to improve at all you still need as many guests in the park each day as possible. Yes, it sucks. Yes, working conditions like crappy breakrooms and what not SUCKS. But, in my opinion, things are not going to improve anytime soon. I would like to see the company, as a whole, have all the cast members they need with the best possible pay and benefits. I will always like this company regardless of how rough it is working for them at times. I like to think that things will get better given the right amount of time. :cucumber:

This would be a front gate riot waiting to happen
Stores is so under staffed it's horriable. Scheduling is correct - there is not one thing they can do. I talked with a union rep yesterday & he said the turn over is almost out of control. He also stated "something" has to give but didn't elaborate. I do know both reps were at DLR because
CMs are in such need of support.

How about messing around with the park hopper pass? On days when DL is going to be at capacity they could seriously discount the price of admission to California Adventure. I mean JUST California Adventure.

From my few visits it seems like that might be enough to sway some of the local guests into spending the day there instead of at DL, and take some of the pressure off the main Park. It never looks like CA is anywhere near as crowded as DL, and CA can absorb the crowds better anyway.

You know, 30 years ago there was the Twilight Admission (I think that's what it was called) that was designed to bring older locals into the park on weekday evenings by giving them a big band concert or something. It was genius-- polite, well behaved guests who almost never rode a single ride, but bought like crazy at the stores to take stuff home for their grandchildren. A better demographic could never be found.

Of course, I'm old enough that I can still make the case that going back to ride tickets would be the smartest thing they could ever do too. The tickets kept the lines balanced and the crowds scattered. If you give Joe and Mary Smith from DesMoines a ticket book that includes a ride on the Mark Twain before the day is over they are going to use it, and a full Mark Twain is that many fewer people standing in line at Pirates. DL can hide a heck of a lot of people if only they are hidden in the proper places around the park.

My point is that Disney used to know how to balance these things so much better than they do now. These days it seems to be all about that ticket booth and to hell with what they do or where they go once they're inside. Too bad they have forgotten-- it makes DL a better place to work and a better place to visit too.

Sorry, end of lecture. :)

I will try as a new Disney hire to give the guests a magical time... I'm in Foods, at Main Street Disneyland. My first shift, now that I have finished OJT, is Coke Corner.

I totally agree with Skull Rocker. As a matter of fact, I've been saying the same thing myself for years. When the guests have a limited amount of "E" tickets it keeps the lines from being more than an hour long, because they don't repeat ride their favorites over and over. Most are cautious about how they distribute their "E's" and time. It also ensures that the less popular attractions are fully utilized as well. From an operational standpoint, you know exactly how much money an attraction is making because there is a dollar value attached to each type of ticket.

I just saw a couple of books of old Magic Kingdom Club and regular tickets - including the old "E" tickets last week. I haven't seen those suckers in years - talk about nostalgia.

Personally, I think park hopping should be severely limited and color coded. Half those idiots don't bother getting handstamps, insist "no one" told them they needed handstamps and then they do nothing but give grief to the poor shmuck at the other gate who has to tell them to read the fine print on the backs of their tickets.
