Re: Gosh, I am not sure which cms I feel for the most :(
Hear, hear! Well said. Some of my most magical times with cast members have been on the cruises. Don't want to take away anything from the park CM's, but the CM's on the cruises work so hard and for such long hours and still somehow manage to cheerfully go the extra mile (or 2 or 3) for the guests.Syndrome wrote:If you think the guests are bad at WDW, that's nothing compared to DCL! We've taken 49 Disney cruises and have gotten to know many of the CMs. I've also noticed that because they are a) in service positions and b) from other countries, many guests think they can treat them like slaves. They lambast the CMs and treat them as inferiors...man, I'd like to choke those guests! If they took the time to talk to the CMs, they'd see that many are probably more educated than themselves. For example, in chatting with one of our stateroom hosts, my husband once discovered that the host was actually a highly educated engineer who had been involved with construction/maintenance on the ship. But he could actually make more money as a stateroom host, due to tips. I'll bet most of the haughty guests don't have an engineering degree...you have no right to treat someone as inferior because of what they do or where they come from.
I also hate it when they jump all over a CM for enforcing the rules (for example, the "But my kid is SPECIAL and doesn't have to follow the rules" mothers who have a stroke when junior gets kicked out of the adult pool). I know those are the kind of peple who probably bitch to Guest Services, so I make it a point to note the CM's name and turn in a compliment on the very same incident.
Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now, but seeing the CMs treated badly is a real pet peeve of mine. After so many cruises, I consider many of them to be my friends, and I hate seeing "Ugly Americans" acting like jerks to them.
And as others have said, finding this site has made me much more aware of how guests act at WDW...including myself! We live in Celebration, so we're right "next door" and visit the parks a lot. I try very, very hard not to be a passhole!
Great idea on turning in the compliment when you see a CM being abused by a "guest" -- I did the same thing with a frazzled hostess at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater last year, who was having to deal with a jerk who couldn't understand why he had to wait in line like everyone else. After reading so many of the horror stories here (funny though they may be), I make it a point to note CM's names and turn in compliments whenever possible.

I would like to send out a special thanks to a CM at Animal Kingdom.
We had just gotten in the raft for Kali River Rapids, when the loading CM asked us if we were ready to go. I was there with my friend and her 11 year old brother, and he was being particularly rude that day. When the CM asked if we were ready, my friend's brother said "yeaaaaah whatever" trying to show off for the other kids in the boat.
Well, as he said this, the CM walked over to our raft and dumped his bottle of water on his head. Now, I'm certain he only did that because we were going to get soaked anyway, but it was about time someone shut him up. I just stared open-mouthed at the CM, but he gave me a not so sly wink.
While I love all Cast Members, I have to say this person is my favorite.
If you worked on Kali River Rapids this past thanksgiving, later in the day, please let me know.
As for who I feel the most for, I think it's the Dinoland CMs with their wonderfully stylish neon green pants with dinosaurs on them.

First, if you're taking the 11-night Southern Caribbean cruise Sept. 17-27, watch for me!

Passporter's DCL Guide IS awesome, as Zazu said (more modest disclaimer: I'm quoted in it). Here are two other terrific online resources, so you can read in detail what is available and help you decide what to do:kelli giorgio wrote:My fiancee` and I are taking a Disney cruise for our honeymoon in Sept. The Magical Disney Cruise Guide is a thorough, continually updated 80-page guide to cruising with Disney, hosted by the wonderful Allearsnet.com.
For the voice of experience, you can't beat Castawayclub.com. Barb & Tony have cruised with DCL over 50 times (Wow! Do the math -- the cruise line is only 8 years old, after all!!), and they have a ton of pictures, trip reports, menus, and other goodies on their website. (Barb is also one of us SGT-ers -- she posts here as "Syndrome".)
Hope this helps! Have a great trip!!

I'll put in a plug for Passporter too (since I am one of the expert reviewers :D: ).
And also for my website castawayclub.com, although I can't take too much credit anymore...my intrepid hubby has taken over most of the editing duties. You'll find the Navigators very helpful as they tell you what there is to do every day.

Well, I just feel that I should chime in here. I feel that the Passporter is an excellent book and I had nothing to do with producing it, I just bought it at a bookstore and took it with me to WDW, it was a great help and if you have kids it's even better cause it has a kid's perspective on all the rides and I think the restaurants too...sorry it's been 2-3 years since I used it, can't remember exactly.

As a magic kingdom cast member I appreciate park cast members the most. The pay is not great, but some of the smiles that you see make it worth it.
