Hubby and I are pin collectors. We buy pins we like or ones that would make a neat collection to have framed. Haven't gotten to framing them yet but I figure we will have at least one wall covered in framed sets of pins.

I have tried pin-trading now and then, mostly with kids in our family when we travel. My niece and nephews know they can "bank" their favorite pins with me and O (hubby). If they get a pin that they really want to keep, I trade it off the lanyard with something that they can use for a trade later. Then when we get home, they can trade with me again to get the other pins (the ones they really liked) back. I came up with the idea after watching some guy inspecting a little girl's lanyard for the pin she had just traded for. He watched her trade for it and then was trying to talk her into trading it to him. It was lucky that her parents were nearby because I have a feeling he would have just taken the pin right of the lanyard if he could have. I don't like the idea of adults looking at little kid's lanyards for rare pins. (something about candy from a baby...)

Pin trading should really be optional. I know jack about pin trading so when I get questions from the die-hard traders about a certain pin or a certain collection they usually just get a blank look.

I know that sometimes our hat sewers have forgotten to take them off before sowing and they've had guest come up, and while they're sowing a name on the back of a pair of Mickey ears, had they're lanyard yanked so the guest could see the pins.

Pin Trading

Post by Mommytomjm » Mon Jun 20, 2005 7:24 pm

We never intended to get any pins for MJ because frankly, we can't afford it. However, people started giving them to her left and right. We didn't want any of her pins to be traded at all, so we put them on a fabric covered cork board with locking backs and fasten it above her head on her wheelchair. There is a story with every pin (and one earring) and I can tell you every one. The look of delight on CM's faces when they see "their" pin on her chair is a treasure to me. I do feel a bit bad that ppl ask her to trade and I say no, but not bad enough to give in. Fortunately for us, MJ has no concept of trading, she just loves her gifts!

Oh boy you opened a can of worms here!! The passholes are getting really annoying, pushy and demanding. Because of these passholes I will purposely wear a kid lanyard and put the lanyard pins on there just to piss them off and it works. They usually look at my lanyard, don't trade, bitch about how the lanyard pins are on my kid lanyard and storm off.

My worst AP experience was when I was a lead (in Store Ops) one day walking around my complex doing some of my paperwork, when I feel someone grab the back of my lanyard and just yank. Of course since the lanyard has the velcro on the other end, it came right off. I turned around to see this lady wearing 3 lanyards turning my lanyard over to see what pins I had on it. I immediatly grabbed it right out of her hand and put it in my pocket and walked away. She followed me around yelling about how she wanted to trade something. I ignored her for a few minutes and finally I just turned around and told her that she was the reason none of the cast members wanted to wear lanyards anymore and that because of her rudeness my lanyard was not going to be worn for the rest of the day, and that if I saw her grab another cast members lanyard like that again I would be calling security. She glared at me for a second and then looked at my nametag (I assumed she wanted to go make a complaint at City Hall), so I said my name, spelled it out for her, and informed her of where City Hall was located. She gave an angry sigh and stormed off.
I wasn't too worried about any consequences as I had already put in my two weeks and my last day was in just four days. As far as I know, my managers never got a call saying there was a guest complaint about me.

One day my lead decided to put a pin right through the velcro tabs. I think he was just being funny, since he's that kind of guy, and it wasn't a problem, of course. We could have fixed it easily if we wanted to but chose not to.

But I can only imagine what would have happened if what you described had happened to me while wearing that particular lanyard.
