Discrimination...on Smokers?

i completely understand that smoking is an addiction, and i really do feel for those people who are hooked on cigarettes.. however it's hard for me to have sympathy for someone who disregards specified no smoking areas when there are areas that are specifically for smoking.. my mother has severe asthma and allergies.. second hand smoke can kill her, and has given her problems many times. of course, yes we can and will move away from smoke if we can, but sometimes we are in a space that we have to stay in or that are hard to get out of quickly.. (some examples in disneyland might be lines, a ride that we are already on, etc..) i totally i understand that smokers need and want to smoke.. but non-smokers also need and want to be able to breathe and not get sick.. i'm just saying it would be nice if you are a smoker just please be aware of where you are when you light up, and that some people around you might not enjoy a lungful of smoke... and don't take it personally if someone doesn't like your cigarette.. it's ok to dislike the smoke, and still respect the smoker as a person.

sorry if this offended anyone, my intention is not to complain but to show a different side to the previous posts.. :)

Guys and Gals... Do not turn this into a political debate about smoking or not smoking, (which is where I see this heading.) It is not the place.

Now back on topic the only time I would tell smokers to stop was when they would smoke in the resturant outdoor seating area. Most of the people I would stop would be Europeans where, I assume, smoking is allowed in most areas. One lady threw me for a loop once (I know I already posted this one but...)

One day I was Bussing outside the BBC/BFB when I saw a lady in a wheelchair onnected to an oxygen tank. What really caught my eye was that all over the tank were stickers like "No Smoking" and "Oxygen in use." This would seem normal except for the fact that I had to walk over and ask her to put out her cigarette. She was in a no smoking area, not forgetting the fact that she was a moving no smoking area! I was waiting all day to hear a large explosion. No luck there.

OMG Cujo!!! She seems to be a good partner for my husband's late grandfather. Sweetest man, but he was a heavy, heavy smoker, continuing on through his bout with emphasema - sitting there with the oxygen tank and his cigarette going at the same time.

Good point about people from outside California, and especially outside the U.S. - they don't have the same smoking restrictions that we have - in California, it's probably the toughest no-smoking zone measures in the country. If you think about it, when you go to visit a different country, you don't exactly research the minutuae of things like local smoking ordinances - you're worried about the big stuff - sights to see, ways to get around town, good restaurants and bars, hotels, the local embassy or consulate...smoking laws? We don't have no stinkin' smoking laws ;)

it is true that in all of europe the only place you're not really supposed to smoke is a school, but even there they have areas set aside for the smokers (atleast that's how it is in germany)

I've heard things are slowly changing. In Ireland, they just passed a ban on indoor smoking last year (including pubs) which had the local smokers up in arms. They were fretting about having to smoke outdoors at night in the dead of winter - which was one of the things that induced me to quit. I can't remember what other laws have changed, but it's pretty much smokey in Italy and France from what I've heard from friends who travel there a lot. If you get a daily newspaper, there were a lot of stories about the Irish ban toward the end of last year - I suppose BBC News or CNN online might be a way of researching recent changes...

yea i read about the irish ban on smoking in public places on the BBC, sounds familiar when ya think about it, i think england and scotland are thinking about passin a similar bill too ...its moving east...its moving east

If someone is making an effort to stay away from others and lights up in a relatively secluded area (such as near a CM gate) I typically let it go.

But even if they are trying to stay out of the way, they aren't necessarily out of the way. Often times people will light up where they think no one is around but they don't realize that the bush wall that they are standing by is merely that bushes...smoke travels through bushes...what's on the other side of that?.... an attraction and all of their smoke has now drifted through the bushes and into the ride path...to be breathed in by many small children. Plus you never know who may have major health problems due to the smoke, at least if it's all in one area people can find a way to avoid it.

I should have told her that Christopher Robin died of lung cancer from second hand smoke and that is why he doesn't come out to see the children anymore. I could fake tears if needed...

Very funny! Serve's 'em right too. I have to disagree w/BirdMom (sorry!) even tho I have never smoked - or maybe because I never have. I dunno.

Having lived in a great state which has taught people that A. Smoking is bad, B. Smoking is just as bad for people around you who DON'T WANT TO SMOKE, and C. You have no right to endanger others just because YOU chose to smoke, YOU chose to keep smoking, and YOU got YOURSELF addicted.

I still remind people that they're not in a smoking area and that they have to put out their smokes. I have a 19 month old daughter and I'm not going to put up with that around her. What ticks me off is how many CM's don't remind people not to smoke. It's not going to work well if people just light up anywhere and aren't told not to. The purpose of the park's smoking policy is to not have to have "No Smoking" signs everywhere. So CM's do need to do their job of reminding people.

I'd had jerks just go on smoking after I told them not to. I was strongly tempted to just snatch the butt out of someone's hand and drop it down the back of his neck. Your cig buddy, hope you enjoy it!

Oh, and BTW - it isn't discriminatory. Smoking is a choice, not a birthright. If we reminded people not to inject heroin into their veins or to not masturbate in public that wouldn't be discrimination either - they chose to do it, but they aren't allowed to.

The back and forth about smoking reminds me of a Steve Martin bit. It starts off with Steve being asked, "Do you mind if I smoke?"

"Why no," replies Steve, "Do you mind if I fart? It's a habit I've had for a long time. I quit for a year but I gained a lot of weight. After sex I always like to light one up."
