Hey, Labuda! (Heh, I know you from Laughing Place, I'm lil_kim2005!)
I'm surprised that this actually happened to me one time and I'm not even 18, but I was talking with a CM and a guest asked me which way is Pirates. (We were at Tarzan's Treehouse.) I just kind of looked at them strangely and pointed towards the building.

Um... whose baby is this?

At least you worked at the park. Wherever I go, people always assume I work there. Be it Disneyland, Knott's, Electronics Stores, or even..Wal-Mart.
I wish I knew what I was doing wrong...

RIP Bud Hurlbut.
You will be missed.

Yeah, I seem to get questions most places I go as well. I haven't been to the park since Rocket Rods was new, but even then, in plain clothes, with no Disney gear anywhere on me, I got asked directions, times, the usual...
I think it does have something to do with looking like you know your surroundings.
I just find it annoying when I'm shopping in any old retail store, and obviously not wearing Target Red or Wal-Mart Blue - or whatever the look of the store is, and some dope comes up to me and asks me an obviously-meant-for-employees only question. Very annoying...

I could not resist posting as well. I have never worked for the Mouse, but I am a big fan. HI!
I too have always seemed to have folks think I worked in any retail/customer service job, even at DL. Its kind of depressing to thing that the first impression you give is "wait on me, sell me something, help me." On the other hand I am the guy who happily give directions and help of any sort.
When I worked at FAO Schwarz in San Francisco, even when I was out of costume I would still salute guests, then get very embarrassed since I did not have my costume on.

This should help:

Happens to me all the time. I was stopped twice today at both Officemax and Fry's...
I do have to admit (unintentionally) taking advantage of mistaken identity in an around the park. My wife and sons teamed up to give me a fairly unusual gift a few years ago. It was a dark blue dickies industrial type workshirt with a vintage 70s disneyland name patch on it. Apparently, my wife was at my parents and found this vintage patch still in the wrapper in my scrap book. My 5 yr old saw it and insisted that she put it on a shirt and give it to me for Fathers day. Anyway, I ended up wearing it into the park (we always make our annual trip around Father's day)along with my usual casual garb of choice (dark dockers pants, DM workshoes). Slowly, it began to dawn on me that CMs where treating/talking to me sort of, well, weird. Then I started to notice CM discounts appearing on my receipts from in and around the park. Then other guests started asking questions. My wife thought it was hilarious. I guess the vintage patch throws off a lot of people (including quite a few CMs).
Anyway it was sort of fun (for a day). I must have answered about 20 guest questions (hey, I even remembered to use the two fingered point)...

(This was at WDW) I wore one of those red nametags you can buy over at Downtown Disney. I surprisingly got a few questions one day at MGM. One of their first questions was "Do you work here?". I had to reply "I like to think that I do." I went ahead and told them where Prime Time was and when Fantasmic was going to be.

Re: Guest questions to past cms
Back before I joined the cast, I used to love wearing my red nametag. And not just because of the reaction of other guests -- because of the reaction of CMs!
Was wearing it as I approached the turnstiles at Epcot one day and the greeter opened the stroller gate for me and asked, "So, is Test Track every going to open?"
"At this point," I replied, "I'm ready to put World of Motion back in."
Clearly, she assumed that this long-haired, bearded, old fart with the loud Hawaiian shirt coming in alone at 9:30am *must* be an Imagineer. If only!
Disclaimer: Despite the open stroller gate, I whipped out my AP and said, "Let me help keep the gate count up."
