Known for his portrayal of Major Charles Winchester on M*A*S*H, was also the voice of Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. In addition, if memory serves, he became a conductor.

So Sad. He did do a lot of voice work after MASH.

He was an excellent foil to Hawkeye and BJ, much better than Frank ever was.

You're right. Frank was one crazy dude. B.J. and Hawkeye's pranks and jokes worked much better on Charles. Killing off Frank in a plane crash over the ocean on his way back to the States was the best thing they did for the series.

I am saddened by the news. I've liked DOS ever since I first saw him on M.A.S.H. I was always delighted when he turned up in something I was watching or in something I wanted to watch.

One small note on Frank Burns, though, felinefan. I think you confused his exit from the story with Col. Blake. Franks went nuts after Margaret rejected him and harassed several women and a general, I think, in Tokoyo. He was sent stateside for psychiatric evaluation, but was eventually cleared and promoted to a stateside position. Col. Blake was shot down in a stunning turn, and supposedly they didn't tell the cast before shooting the scene in order to get their "real" reactions.

Frank went nuts in Tokyo. Tokoyo is in Wakanda.

Not just Cogsworth, but also Governor Ratcliff in Pocahontas and Jumba in Lilo & Stitch. And yes, he brought a very real passion for classical music to his role as Winchester, and was guest conductor for many symphony orchestras in real life. Talented guy.

True story: I walked into a rehearsal last night of a men's ensemble I direct and greeted them all with "Gen-tlemen..." and one of the guys pointed out that was a standard greeting for Major Winchester. And I've been doing it myself for so long, I'd forgotten that that is exactly where I picked it up from.

I stand corrected. Thank you, WEDfan
