If you're interested in film you'll get something out of this.

I remember reading 2001: A Space Odyssey and seeing the movie when I was a kid. As I recall, the movie stuck pretty closely to the book, which is kind of unusual. I once read the book and saw the movie for Blackbeard's Ghost--totally different.

What was unusual is that the movie preceded the book. The screenplay was based on Clarke's short story "The Sentinel", which covered only the discovery of the monolith. When his publisher demanded that Clarke put out a book-length version, he based it on the film, which is why there's such a good match. However, he felt obliged to change the ending, as he never understood Kubrick's vision. (And Kubrick couldn't explain it to him as he didn't entirely understand it either.)

Yeah, come to think of it, I didn't understand how he went from a decrepit old man in a bed confronted by the monolith, then all of a sudden there's a giant embryo/fetus floating above the earth.

Good! Your lack of understanding shows that you were paying attention.
