A Philanthropist, she funded a then state-of-the art ambulance for Scripps La Jolla Hospital from Dallons Laboratories late 1960's/early 1970's. How do I know? My Step-Father and Mom got to take it there

I met her years ago while waiting for a table at McArthur Park in Palo Alto. Just some small talk while our groups waited to be seated.

She had a full and mostly happy life. Mom had a book on her, written by her, and I'm surprised she didn't become a Hollywood spoiled brat--you should see the playhouse they built for her in their backyard! Wonder if the house is still standing?
I remember years ago reading that in China, some people believe Shirley Temple never grew up, always stayed a little girl. She was a very brave woman, the first to announce to the media that she was battling breast cancer, at a time when it was still taboo. She won the battle. An altogether amazing woman. Now she's back with those who shared the screen with her, especially Bojangles.

I did but I wouldn't have if she hadn't had pictures published when she became an ambassador.

My best celebrity contact was with Tyrone Willingham. He had just moved from Stanford to Notre Dame as head football coach. He spoke at our annual sales meeting in Las Vegas. We were having a big party at the ESPN Zone that night.

I already had my wristband. i walked up to the door and there was Tyrone trying to get in. He apparently wasn't on the guest list and the guy at the door was not going to let him pass.

I asked the door guy if this was the ESPN Zone? He said yes. I asked him if he watched college football? He said yes. I told him this is Tyrone Wilingham. He just finished coaching Stanford. He's now coaching Notre Dame. LET HIM IN!!! The rope magically dropped.

I took Tyrone by the arm and hustled him in before the door guy could recover. I delivered him to the president of the company as Tyrone was his guest. From the look on his face Tyrone still wasn't quite sure what had just happened.

I'm not sure about that but the prez stopped me in the hall the next day. He said he liked my action and was sending me to Sales Club. That was a pretty big deal. Basically an all expenses paid four day vacation for my wife and I in an exotic location.

The funny part was it was Maui that year. We had just bought the house so we arranged to have my wife's brother and his family come along to watch the kids at the house while we partied with the big guys and attended a private concert with Huey Lewis and The News. We were so close that my wife asked me later if I had see all the fillings in Huey's teeth.

My father-in-law worked at the Pentagon during the Korean War and he has some stories about Ms. Black storming in and demanding to know where her husband was. (He worked for The Company and often had assignments that took him to places he was not allowed to disclose.) She raised enough of a ruckus that my DFIL was always convinced that she was a nutcase.
