Dennis Farina, a Chicago police officer turned character actor who cemented his second career playing gangsters, cops and other tough guys in film and TV, died Monday. He was 69.

The actor, perhaps best known in recent years for his stint on the TV crime drama "Law & Order," died at a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung, said his publicist, Lori De Waal.

He was very believable in whatever role he played.

Wow, this one took me by surprise. Loved him in "Get Shorty."

I never watch much TV and if I do it wouldn't be Law & Order, but I do remember seeing him in Dave Barry's, Big Trouble! He played one of two hit men that were hired to kill a crooked business man. He had a scene in a Restaurant where he was trying to enjoy his NY Strip Steak and a guy at the table next to him fired up a huge cigar. He got up and respectfully asked the guy to put it out, when the guy refused...well lets just say it went out quickly but hilariously. Dave Barry is a comedy writer so his stuff isn't gruesome at all, just funny.

Dennis was a fabulous character actor and will be missed. I believe, sadly, that the only people that saw that movie was myself and about three other people. It was good though. :D:

I was one of those three!!! I enjoyed that movie. It had the misfortune to be slated for release in the Fall of 2001, but then the 9/11 attack happened -- and a key moment in the movie is people (comically) evading airport screening to get weapons on a plane. Needless to say it was bumped and didn't get much studio push after that.

It probably goes without saying considering it's Dave Barry we're talking about, but the book -- his only novel -- is hilarious.

I have to agree on both points...the timing could not have been worse AND pretty much anything that Dave Barry writes is hilarious. It's not always in what he says, but more often then not, it how he phrases stuff that makes me laugh out loud! :D:
