On the disney cruise ships, they have these magic portholes.

People can look out and see disney charactors having fun on the ocean. are these real portholes with video overlays, or just video monitors placed to look like they are real?

Disney has some neat technology. if they really wanted to play with our minds, no one would know.

They are just video monitors. Think about it, they are on the INSIDE cabins. And you can turn them off at night.

If Warner Bros. had a cruise line you'd see a giant squid attacking the ship.

If Dreamworks had a ship, you'd see a giant squid attacking and carrying a mouse off the ship.

Mickey screaming and pounding on the portal.
HELP ME, HELP ME, OMG, It hurts.....
and then a bloody smear going down into the water.
or mouse parts flying all over.

The magic portholes are clever. The HD feed is from a camera facing in the direction that you would be looking were that an outside cabin. It allows the image to stay in sync with teh motion of the ship that you are feeling. we enjoyed ours, but found that we left it off most of the time. It was handy for checking if it was raining ooutside however. the visits from characters were about every 30 minutes if I remember correctly. The magic portholes sell out first, so the real porthole is often a cheaper cabin now on the Dream and Fantasy. On our next cruise we will have our first outside cabin, an oversize aft balcony on the Dream. I doubt we will miss the porthole.

The more fascinating tech for me was in the skyline lounge, where the "windows" are huge plasma screens, showing a wide screen hi def night scene of various cities. The city changes every 20 minutes, along with the artwork and soundtrack. Tinkerbell flys in and sprinkles pixie dust, and the room changes. Combine that with some high octane adult drinks...

I don't take that gown on cruises. Takes up too much luggage & storage space.

And I'm sure you would run into someone else wearing something VERY similar !
