Ms. Ride was something of a hero to the Cuddlebug (she wants to be an astronaut and astrophysicist.) I'm wondering, now, how we're going to break the news to her.

Space travel is dangerous. Sometimes in ways obvious, sometimes in ways subtle. The radiation exposure makes cancer more likely in astronauts than in those of us who keep to a lower orbit.

This is one of the reasons why astronauts are often called heroes, despite what turn out to be often mundane duties in space.

And an early death is occasionally the price of glory.

Sally Ride was such an inspiration to a generation of Tech girls. She literally broke through that glass ceiling at NASA. She'll be missed but not forgotten.

A post from a friend which is meaningful.

We Lost an Inspiration.

...She slipped the Surly Bonds of Earth...
...may she dance the Skies on Laughter-Silvered Wings...
..Ride, Sally Ride...

Another reason to be proud of Dr. Ride is that she had the courage to come out, even if it was in her obituary. Even in this day and age, that's not an easy thing to do.
