Boy, they really don't seem shy about getting in the enclosure with the croc there in Sydney, do they?

There was a news item this morning about a woman who slipped through the fences to the elephant enclosure at the L.A. Zoo because she wanted to pet the elephants; she loudly announced her intentions to the crowd before going in. After petting the elephants, she came out the same way she came in, and was arrested and 5150'ed. What if one of those pachyderms decided to smash her?

They have a pretty good safety record, actually. :) And they are a fairly major supplier of anti-venom.

What kills me about that one is how it was reported. Kind of a "What? They don't plan to kick up security?" attitude.

IMHO, zoos have better ways to spend their money than to keep the occasional visitor who is off their meds out of the (already well separated) animal areas.

My former graduate adviser at UF raised Dutch Warmblood horses and these horses could be huge. I was at a horse show holding a mare and the horse turns it's head around and slams right into my head. I was seeing stars (and cursing) for a few moments. I know what a horse can do. Why would I want to climb into an elephant pen? Or any other wild animal for that matter(think polar bears!)? I think people forget they are wild.

I personally think that croc was damned lucky. That mower was running long after it went under the water. It's a wonder it wasn't chopped by the blades.

Apparently he did loose a couple of teeth!

The video took so long to load I didn't bother. I remember when Steve Irwin was alive, he'd go in and mow the lawn in the croc exhibits, and one of his crocs, Agro, had a thing with "killing" lawn mowers and whipper-snippers (string trimmers to us Yanks). But if you want to have a nice-looking exhibit--as well as a safe one, don't want the crocs sneaking up on you in tall grass--it has to be done. And crocs are hard to move after they get to a certain size.
