Attractions, other sites at Disneyland expose visitors to lead, group says

Dozens of leaded-glass windows and brass rail chains, door knobs and drinking water fountains at some of Disneyland's most popular attractions expose children to high levels of lead, according to an environmental group seeking a court injunction Tuesday to require the amusement park to cover the items or post health warnings.

The Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court in April against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S. Inc., alleging excessive levels of lead in such commonly touched objects as the Sword in Stone attraction, where Disneyland photographers encourage children to pose while pulling on the sword handle. Other objects include brass door knobs at Minnie's House and stained-glass windows in a door at the entrance to a beauty salon in Cinderella's Castle. full article

And all i can find out about Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation by googling is lawsuit after lawsuit. No website. No wiki page. Nothing. I see this going away quietly.

My guess is they have changed their scam from ADA suits to shake downs of amusement parks.

If they REALLY wanted to scare us, they'd culture the Bacteria off the same objects A lot more likely to cause disease! For goodness sake, WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!

It is bad enough that Disney had to post the signs all over the resort "There are things in use here known to cause cancer" or whatever they say. Now they have to deal with these nutjobs? Makes you wish they could up and move the whole resort to someplace sane, oh, like Texas :D:

Around here it's easy to tell who works in a visitor job. They're always infected with the latest plague du jour from the Mainland.

Unless the kids are actually trying to eat these things, the chance of lead poisoning is minimal. I used to chew on lead paint when I was a small kid and it had no effect on me. :twisted:

The level the CDC defines as “elevated” has dropped significantly since the 1960’s, in response to clear evidence even very low levels of lead are harmful to children’s health (Figure 1). Currently, the CDC defines an “elevated” blood lead level as one that is greater than or equal to 10 µg/dL (Table 1). In 1976, the average child in the United States had a blood lead level of approximately 16 µg/dL, suggesting a person who grew up in the United States in the 1970’s (including the author) was exposed to lead levels currently considered to be unacceptable.

Kids who eat well are less harmed by lead exposure than kids who have a poor diet (and not just because starving kids are more likely to eat enough paint chips to be hazardous :p: ). Lead is a cumulative poison, but the body can process it to some extent -- the problem is when it's coming in faster than someone can get rid of it. So even if many visitors regularly let their kid gnaw on door knobs and lick stained glass windows , and even if the lead levels are high, probably not a big health risk.

We live in a home built in 1910 - now there's a lead health risk for ya. :D:
