My Stupid Vacation

Well, we got back from California late last night. It was an amazingly fun and relaxing trip. I thought I'd post the lowlights here, such as they were. I'm not too good at seeing Stupid Guest in others, but I'm a wiz at self-recriminations.

We arrived, starving, at LAX at around 1 PM local time a week ago last Friday. We had been up for 12 hours and had only had a light breakfast about 8 hours ago. We decided to hightail it to the hotel and eat there.

But the hotel was in Orange County, right by the Orange County airport. I learned that we flew in to the wrong airport after I had bought the tickets. Sigh.

We used Supershuttle to get to the hotel. It took 2 and a half hours to get to the hotel! It was only 15-20 miles away! By then we were both starving and exhausted so we ate a meal and had a nap and slept right through the dinner arrangements we had made with friends.

We rented a car on Sunday and drove up to Disneyland Monday, parking in the Woody lot. We got there at exactly park opening and seeing everyone rushing en-mass to Tomorrowland, we decided to go to Adventureland and ride Indiana Jones.

We spent a while on that side of the park and after lunch wandered over to Tomorrowland to get fast passes for Star Tours. But they had been gone since 9:30 that morning! We decided not to spend over two hours in the standby lines and never did get to ride Star Tours, a shame since that was the whole reason we planned our California vacation.

We did get to ride the new-to-us Finding Nemo Subs and see the new-to-my-wife Captain Eo. Unfortunately, the Matterhorn was closed for renovation, which was a shame since that was the whole reason we planned our California vacation.

The park was so crowded! I've never been to a Disney park that was that crowded before. I usually try to go on the "off-season," but we had gone to California for a conference, so timing was not on our side.

We left the park for dinner and my wife wasn't feeling well. She took a cab back to the hotel and I went back to the park to use our Space Mountain fastpasses and try to get on Star Tours, but the line was too long for me to stand it.

The next day we went to DCA. Learning our lesson from Star Tours, we rushed to get fast passes for The Little Mermaid, since no less than two different Cast Members swore the ride had FP (it does not). Instead we got FP for Soarin and waited about 45 minutes for Ariel. I'm glad we got to ride it since that was the whole reason we planned our California vacation.

We went over to the pier to try the new-to-us Toy Story Midway game, which was a lot of fun, definitely my favorite of the ride-and-shoot rides. The park was also very crowded, but we didn't have long waits due to our clever use of Fast Pass.

My wife's feet were hurting, so she took a break before World of Color (we got the dining special) while I took a look at Flynn's arcade. Fun games from my college days! On the way back to World of Color, I got coupons for tokens for Flynn's. Too late though.

My wife had snagged totally excellent seats for WoC because she had hurt her foot and the nice Cast Members there let her sit in the handicapped section. I want to make this clear here. My wife has plantar fasciitis, a legitimate medical condition where her feet will cause her great pain. She could not have stood to see the show, but we didn't have any sort of passes or wheelchairs or ECVs. Still the CMs there let her sit in the handicapped section. That was very nice of them and they deserve kudos.

Wednesday we went to visit my niece in San Diego. We walked around Balboa park and then saw Weird Al Yankovic at the fair that night. He put on a great show as always and my niece, who is not a Weird Al fan, had a great time. He did sing Perform This Way live, which was great since that was the whole reason we planned our California vacation.

Thursday we drove up from LA to Monterrey. The google maps said it would take around 5 hours, but since we were taking the Pacific Coast Highway, I guessed it would take maybe 7 or 8 hours. 12 hours later we arrived in Monterrey and slept. Dinner in Big Sur was excellent. Driving around Big Sur after sunset was terrifying.

On the way from Monterrey to San Francisco, we stopped at the Winchester house. My wife had never seen it before and it was the whole reason we planned our California vacation. They had really cool hoodies one of which I bought. It was $50, but it looked really cool.

We made it to SF and decided to visit Pier 39 to see the sea lions. It was chilly there so I decided to wear my new hoodie only to discover that it was too small. WTF? It had the same sizing, XXL, as my other hoodies and they are loose on me. But this one was too small. Argh! I should have tried it on before I bought it. Now here I was at Fisherman's Wharf, freezing with only a t-shirt (and pants). My wife lent me her jacket.

We had dinner at the Stinking Rose and then got up the next day to get to the airport for the flight home, garlic still coursing in -- and out of -- our systems. This made sitting in a small enclosed airplane extra special for us, and the people around us.

I bring the rental car in when I realize I forgot to fill the gas tank beforehand. I mean, I've rented cars before. I know: you always fill the tank. That's how they get you, when you forget. Sigh. 3/4 tank at $8/gallon That added up. Well, it was a lesson. Sigh.

I know trip reports are not de jure for this message board, but I wanted to let folks know we had a great time, thank them for their advice, and maybe provide a cautionary tale or two of how not to be stupid on vacation.

(Apparently there is a 5000 character limit on messages here).

In SF and no trip to the Walt Disney Family Museum? That's the whole reason why we planned our trip to California!

We didn't have a lot of time in SF, less than half a day really, and the wife really really loves her pinnipeds.

Ah, the Winchester Mystery House! We used to have billboards all over the place, telling you just how far you were from it, back when I was youngin'.

Sounds Fun, Buggy! :)
I'm going to hijack your thread (too lazy to start a new one) to say I'm back from Hell(gate)! That is the river speedboat tour we did while visiting in-laws in Oregon. Lots of Fun,if very wet.

Also went to Burney Falls to camp-absolutely gorgeous! Visited with many relatives, saw Lassen National Monument, and walked thru an underground Lava Tube (Subway Cave).

Wish we could have stopped at the Winchester House! Do you have pictures?

They don't let you take pictures during the tour, and I don't think we got any while in the gardens. Sorry.

(I know I might lose my stupid guest status for not taking pictures when I wasn't supposed to take pictures, but such is life).

Did she inherit the hoody in exchange?

The advantage of stupid guest status is you can always regain it. Well, I'm sure there are stupid guests who know of other advantages, but that's the only one I've ever found, and as perks go, it's not a great one.
