Why, oh why, does this crap happen to me?!? :)

I was in a car accident. I needed some reassurance and to comisserate. My baby is totaled; they just told me a little while ago. I loved my Jeep. She's been paid off for 3 years and was in perfect condition (just ask my mechanic). So, now I get to do the doe-si-doe with the insurance companies.

I'm alright, more or less. I'm working today because I've slept almost full through the last two days and that's just not good (nor productive). I have a concussion, my right hand is sprained (right at the knuckles), and I have something wrong with my neck- it's really sore. I'll get better, though. I'm just trying to take it easy and not over exert myself.

I'll keep everyone updated. I'm just so worried about getting a new car now.

What year/model of Jeep? I was in an accident in my '01 TJ about a year ago, thankfully they fixed it!

That sucks. I am sorry to hear it.

If you get an old jeep and bring it to Florida, I have a friend who can dress it up for you.

Keep your chin as high as you physically can. Things will start looking up.

And don't forget to stop by a chiropractor. Get that done now before stuff has a chance to *really* turn into a problem.

Thank you, guys! How it happened? Sure, I can help with that! lol (I'm trying to remain in good humor)

I was on my way to work and knew the car in front of me would be making his/her left-hand turn soon (I follow the car almost every day). So, I had started to slow down quite a bit before they actually had to stop to make their turn (there was traffic coming the other way). Thank goodness they made the turn when they did, otherwise I would have been slammed into their car. Anyway, I was completely stopped and about to start moving forward when *wham* from behind. No squeal of the tires, nothing (and, no, there are no skidmarks on the street - he didn't even try to stop).

It took a moment to realize I had been hit. I admit it, I was a mess. All I knew was that my neck hurt and I knew how bad that could be, so I picked a spot and held still. My coworker pulled over in front of me as soon as she realized it was my car and another coworker left work (which was only 100 yards away) to come and assist as well (he's EMS). I was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. They did a CT on my neck and X-rays on my lower back and right hand. Thank goodness nothing is broken (but my hand hurts like hell and I can't write worth a damn).

The person that hit me was 18 years old and late for school. Based on the fact that he didn't even realize there was a car in front of me, that I was stopped, and he didn't even try to brake, my money is on the fact he wasn't paying attention to the road!!! Anyway, he got a careless driving ticket.

I'm now in the process of "negotiating" with his insurance company for restitution. The thing is, I just had the Jeep worked on on Halloween and the mechanic raved about how fantastic my engine looked. Ah, well....let's try to think on the positive.

My baby was a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. She was a 4 x 4, 6 cylinders....just wonderful. Now, I face the task of not only replacing her but worrying about how to pay to have her replaced; I know from a conversation I had with the insurance adjuster a little while ago that they don't want to pay up. I politely expressed that he should go back and talk with his underwriters, as I haven't had a payment in 3 years and don't plan on having one now.

And, you know, that's the bitch of it. If I had been making payments (and I always get the GAP insurance), it wouldn't have been so bad; I could go get a new car and keep on making payments. But....I don't have any room in my budget for a car payment.

I just count myself lucky that I am okay. I've got wonderful family and friends that are checking in on me and it's Christmas. I can't wrap presents worth a damn or bake cookies (like I said, my right hand is shot right now), but I'm okay and none of my kids was with me, which is a really good thing.

I'll keep you all informed of any progress. Thanks for listening.

Have your mechcanic call the insurance co and give them a straight evaluation of the jeep. Hopefully it didn't have 'too' many miles on it.

Total bummer. First, take care of yourself. Keep excellent records of diagnosis, treatment and expenses including mileage and meds. It sounds like the injuries you suffered are soft tissue damage. They, like fractures, will take a while to heal. Some may last for the rest of your life. DO NOT sign anything that releases the insurance company from liability unless there's something like six figures after the dollar sign.

Insurance companies never want to pay off. You need to get a rat terrier lawyer. Find one that has a good track record in squeezing every last dime out of insurance companies. Once you get the rat terrier's name call the adjuster and tell him to talk to the lawyer. That may motivate them to pay off before the legal bills start rolling in.

In most cases the most you can hope for is high Blue Book on the Jeep. It sucks but that's what the insurance companies will use for a payoff.

Make sure your rates don't get jacked up as the collision was not your fault.

Get your lawyer to subpoena the kid's cell phone records. I've got $20 that says he was texting.

If you rent a car make sure the insurance company picks up the expense.

Good luck and get better fast.

I was thinking the same thing. If he was, then make him pay for it. There is absolutely no excuse, NO excuse to be texting while driving.
