Stupid Guest Tricks

A female DLR employee wore her hijab for Ramadan on Sunday and was sent home without pay. She had worked there for 2 1/2 years but this was the first time she wore it onstage. Now she's filing a complaint with the EEOC.

Disney wins every time. The Disney look always wins.

Presuming a kipah or some such is also against the rules... she's SOL.

Religious garb on stage is Not allowed at Disney.
many have fought it and lost. they want you to look Disney,
not like anything else.

I assume Disney is able to put such a restriction in place, even regarding clothing required by religious beliefs, by defining its public employees as "cast members" rather than simply employees. Could be wrong, though, as I am nether a lawyer or a Disney CM.

On Wednesday, shortly after filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Boudlal made her fourth attempt of the week — the first with videographers, photographers and reporters in tow — to begin her afternoon shift at the resort-district restaurant, which features a Chip 'n' Dale theme.

Boudlal said she was again told to take off her hijab, the headscarf some Muslim women wear. Boudlal refused and walked out of the hotel, flanked by chanting supporters.

"I've been sent home," she said. "I thought maybe today is my lucky day because I have my friends, my supporters."

Disney officials said Boudlal has never been denied the opportunity to work.

"She's been allowed to work," said Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown. "We've given her the opportunity to work in a backstage role the last several shifts that she's come in."

One backstage role the company offered was a room service cashier, an interim solution until a permanent one could be found, Brown said.

"We knew Disney is very sensitive to their public image so we said, 'Go public,' " said Leigh Shelton, a spokeswoman with Unite Here Local 11, the union that represents Boudlal.

Can you say nuisance lawsuit? This has been tried so many times before. I wonder if she's hoping they'll give her money to go away?

Personally, I'd like to know how the camera crew and her "supporters" got in....don't they have to pay admission? Oh, wait....this is at a Disney Resort hotel right outside the park entrance, correct?

I'm sorry, but this woman is in a losing situation..... She's insisting on wearing her head covering. Fine. Then she'll have to work backstage. The company has made the concession. It's her choice to leave without pay because she wants to be "seen". Ugh. I'm sure she had to sign a paper saying she read the employee manual (we even do that here in my itty-bitty company); if so, then I'm sure there's a paragraph in there somewhere that says she can't wear anything other than official gear when on-stage.

She's trying to play the martyr and, in my opinion, doing a piss-poor job.

I am kind of on the fence about this one. On the one hand, I can understand an employer wanting to avoid having folks mistake an employees beliefs for the company supporting said beliefs, thus enacting a dress code restricting religious symbols and such. On the other hand, in this case, the employee's religion means that they have to wear this particular piece of clothing. On the one hand, I don't like the idea that a person has his employement options curtailed due to their personal belief, but on the other hand, it does seem like an employee with such a belief must accept that certain jobs will not be compatible with the following of that belief.
