All this ignores the sequel's contention that HAL was an innocent victim of contradictory programming, having been giving information and tasks which were to be kept secret from the crew. And in the end, HAL sacrificed himself to save the Russian and American crew members who went to investigate what happened to Discovery. HAL good, evil government operatives bad.

Poor HAL. In 3001 he and Bowman end up on a hard disk locked away in a cave.
