Enlighten me.

Post by HMGar » Thu Jul 01, 2010 10:25 am

I'm a huge Disney fan. I pretty much devour everything Disney any chance I get. It comes from great childhood memories of our yearly family vacation. My mom and dad (while still married) would pack up the car and we would drive from Northern CA to Anaheim. We were broke, but they managed a Disney vacation each summer anyway. They are great memories for me.

Anyway, enough of my history. My confusion is the attitude on this Disney site regarding the "forum X" site. I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, but is that site the DIS discussion board? If so, what is so wrong with the people on that site. I browse it frequently, especially when planning a trip. I've asked questions and usually get really informative and friendly information from those folks. The site is filled with Disney fans like myself who are looking for information and like minded people to share their passion and enthusiasm.

I've also had a life long dream to someday work for Disney so that I can have the opportunity to make "dreams come true" as so many of you have for me in the years that I've enjoyed Disney. I know any job involving the task of trying to keep the general public happy can be very tiring and maddening sometimes. I'm just trying to understand the general attitude toward a group of people on a certain "X" message board.

Any thoughts? Thanks. If my assumption about which forum this is is entirely off base, let me know. I've never seen anyone actually name this site.

Board X is a generic term meant to protect the not-so-innocent ;)
Maybe you haven't read some of the threads there that clearly show some to be rude and obnoxious SGs and worse, some agreeing with them that it is their right and duty to be a SG since Disney costs so much
I am not a CM, but am appalled at the general attitude of entitlement you run into at the Parks and in "real life".

Oh, I absolutely have read some posts that very clearly reveal who the SGs are and their nasty attitudes. When I read those, I either respond by pointing out the errors in their statements, or I ignore them and move on to a more informative or entertaining post.

I guess I'm just confused about why a small percentage of SGs is generalized to a whole population. I think most of the people on the other site are really nice people who are looking to make the most of their vacations.

Amen! My experience with Board X has always been met with cliques, and if you oppose the "cool kids" then you're ridiculed. I also found many of them to be in the entitlement crowd. You bought your ticket to Disney, and that gives you the privilege to experience the magic of the parks. Anything addition is at the whim of the Cast and should not be expected, nor something you should ask for. My family has had many magical experiences, none of which were solicited, none of which we jockeyed into position for and none of it was expected. THAT'S what made it magical.

That's not to say that Board X has good people. I encountered them, but sadly in my experience it was few and far between. I still keep in touch with some of them, and most of us moved on from "those other boards". I came here because the attitude was similar, it's not a "planning" board. I can plan on my own, I don't need the assistance of self-proclaimed experts. If I have specific questions, my CM friends here are more than happy to assist via a PM.

I would say it's more half and half than a small percentage - at best. I don't know about you, but usually when I give my opinion, I get flamed and BAD. God forbid I actually want to enjoy my vaca without "working the system". Most of the time, I try to read entertaining threads or trip reports or I am looking for pics of a particular resort (which has been the case lately since I've never even walked near the Poly).

I agree that there are some very nice people on various Board Xs; however, the percentage that are rude and obnoxious and plan to bend Disney over backward is not small and they are usually very vocal.

Welcome, by the way!!! :waves:

And, since I just read Ktulu's post, yes...most of them are the "entitlement crowd". And I agree, Ktulu, I don't need help planning...especially considering how many times we've gone. Besides, that's half the fun!

I also understand that the terms like "board x, and board Y"and so forth were created so as to not create animosity on those boards, and thus have the SG's come over here and "defend" their attitudes and or position on a given subject.

In other words its designed to reduce trolls.

I agree with other posters, I have always planned my own (successful) Disney vacations since the 70's without needing any "planning board" and even though I joined some different boards, the amount of information available on the Disney web site is more than enough to make a great vacation!

Took the words right outta my mouth. I'm a recovering Board X escapee and lordy, you need a flame-retardant suit in order to do anything over there. I did meet a very small number of really nice people and picked up a very few worthy pieces of info, but for the most part? It's not worth the time or effort.

HMGar, SGT was started as a Cast Member venting site. Somewhere they could say what they wanted to about what some stupid guest did.

It's morphed a little but that is still it's main purpose. It's also a haven for Disney enthusiasts who can't stand Board X's attitude.

My parents like me having get togethers once in a while. We do call them vent parties. I find after having one of these parties, the stress does go down. At my place, a have a nice picture of annoying cheer leaders. I found out later from my sister Moe, that the winning team picture is my aunt's cheer squad. I gave our aunt the negitave to keep.

So, when you have a bad day at work and you come home to complain... Like I did, I threw a medium size phone book at the picture and nothing happened. All I need is a talking dart board and a annoying chef from vending, and it would be a classic. Maybe at the end of this month I will get one. :D:
