Asante, a 10-year old male giraffe who resided at Disney's Animal Kingdom, was put down Friday at a zoo in Springfield MO. During transit, he suffered a broken neck, and was euthanized after vets determined that he would not be able to recover from the injury.

Asante, who's name is a Swahili word meaning 'thank you', was on loan from the San Diego Zoo, for breeding purposes.

Personal Note:
Those of us who work or have worked at Kilimanjaro Safaris are all very familiar with Asante, and his habit of standing in the middle of the road and not wanting to move. Although the ensuing delays often screwed up spacing and made for loading delays, it did make for great show for the guests who were out on the savannah while he was wandering.

In Harambe, we don't like to say good bye. We prefer the Swahili word "kwa herini", which means 'go well'. Kwa Herini, Asante, you will be missed.

for a minute I though you were talking about Armand Assante.

He was on load from San Diego?

poor guy.

broken neck?

that would be major problem, I guess they could somehow splint it.

Oh, poor Asante! My children love giraffes and we spend quite a lot of time just sitting at their enclosure at the Philly Zoo. This is so sad, though, that he suffered an injury during transport.
