Actually stupid doesn't exactly describe this idiot. Maybe stupid idiotic moron would be closer. Seems someone with a negative IQ decided to release his (or her) pet snake back into the wild. Only problem is that the snake was a 5ft. Gaboon Viper.
On the plus side this is Maine and while we didn't get much snow this winter it was still cold enough that the snake died. On the negative side it was found behind our only IMAX theater by a man walking his dog. Yeah like that area doesn't get quite a few people wandering around. Especially kids. "Look what I found Mommy. Oww. It bit me." Five minutes later the kid is dead since the venom is just as deadly in a dead snake as a live one. And knowing kids and even some adults the was a very good chance that something like that could have happened especially since Maine has no native venomous animals.
Don't get me wrong I like snakes. I've owned one and worked with them when I was a zoo keeper. I've even been bitten by a 10 ft Burmese python. But come one people. Why. Why. Why is it necessary to own such a dangerous animal? And why did it have to be released? If you don't want it anymore than kill it and dispose of it properly. Or be a man and call the authorities and admit that you have in your possession a highly illegal pet. But don't just release it where it could kill some innocent person.

What's really bad is that what are the chances a Gaboon viper would be known by the average person, much less that the local hospital would have access to the antivenin for it on hand? That guy should be charged with manslaughter as well as owning a venomous snake, plus animal cruelty. That is so irresponsible.

Is it known that the snake was deliberately released?
I do stipulate that it's no more responsible to keep a venomous snake in such a manner that it's possible for it to escape confinement than to abandon it...

There are no houses nearby the area and the temperatures were below freezing at the time so the chances of the snake escaping and making it to where it was found are very slim.
But then again the owner could have been taking the snake to the movies and it got out then. ;)
