They actually put the original ending in the movie, complete with expensive special effects scenes of the plants destroying various major cities around the world, but it tested horribly. So they reshot a happy ending, with just a hint of malevolence -- the one surviving plant. If you watch that scene carefully, you'll note that only two of the faces of the three-girl "greek chorus" are shown in that last scene. The camera pans down to the plants and you only see the third girl's feet. yeah I know, I have a work print copy of the original ending, the one where the plants win. Supposedly the original ending was included as an extra on a 1998 DVD of the film, but then pulled from store shelves because the producer didn't want it released.
