Colossus: The Forbin Project was the first of three books. In the second, Forbin is able to turn Colossus off. The final one has Martians coming to Earth to steal half of our oxygen. Forbin has to reactivate Colossus to fight them off.
Ron Howard is working on a remake of Colossus but it appears he's stuck in development hell.

It does stand up well even though the technology is very clunky by today's standards.
