CBC News: Will apologize for mistaking autistic teen as drunk, police chief says
CBNT-TV (CBC Newfoundland and Labrador) wrote:The chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said Wednesday the force will apologize to an autistic teenager who was picked up and detained in a lockup because officers assumed he was drunk.

Unfortunately,we hear these stories every once in a while. There was a committee formed in my area to hopefully improve the outcomes when persons with disabilities encounter law enforcement. This includes education on ALL sides, not just the police. One of the things that was set up in our community is a police database id'ing the disabled person, with a photo, physical and personality characteristics, and possible scenarios that might cause them to encounter law enforcement such as if they are a runner, get overwhelmed by crowds or touch, are mute, etc.

*sigh*

This is just typical. People are ALWAYS making hasty assumptions.

I'm glad that they are going to apologize.
