But was the case already opened or did they open it to make the video? Not that it matters, used hard drives are basically free these days.

No kidding. When I worked for a data storage company, we sold 72 Gb drives with fibre channel interfaces for about $2500.

We actually recovered data off one that was disassembled to about that level.

Just removed the platters and put them in a (undamged) case.

took a while!

That's why the recovery companies get so much money. Backups are cheap in comparison.
