Thanks to all the great CM's who made our DL trip another great trip.

So we were at DL the first week of August, my GF decieded she needed to indulge in her bad habit so she went to the smoking area behind BTMRR. Shes in the smoking area and me and da kid are standing by the fence across from it when I get this skunky smell. Not a skunk though, what is commonly known as KGB in California. I start looking around for the culprits but dont find anyone who is obvously commiting the offence. We wait for a few more minutes then I notice two guys over by the buckboard near the entrance to BT ranch, one has something pinched in his fingers and hes handing it to the other guy so now I know whos doing it. I look around for a CM and none are to be found, the two guys are leaving now and they get a few yards away when one relizes hes left his bag sitting there and heads back to get it but still no CM's. These guys were really destinctive, really big, over 6 foot black guys with cornrows and one is wearing jeans with big skulls on the pockets so I dont think they would be hard to find if someone were to go looking. I know they are not the first, nor will they be the last to do this at DL but it is a family place, IMO keep it out of the parks. I saw a security CM later in the hub and thought about letting him know about this, it was quite a bit later but like I said they were pretty distinctive. It did make me think though, is there a phone number for DL security? one thats answered right away? or is it just find a CM and let them pass it on?

Also, saw a comment about DL security in another thread, are they hiring? anyone know what the starting wage is? I have had my hours cut and now my position is getting eliminated, they told me this morning that if things dont pick up I'm probably getting layed off in October/November just about the time I head to WDW. GF wont go to Florida but she will go to S Cal so we migth be looking at some other options.

Don't know about DL, but at WDW Security has one of the highest starting wages, over $9/hr. I've been told they higher sporadically as they wait for enough people to be on the list fill a class.

You don't really say anything about what these two were doing, what is it that is known as KGB in California?

You should have told the first CM you could find then waited while D L Security was called. An officer would have come out for your statement as I understand the policy. Security Officer at Hub should have been informed - if only for descriptions & FYI. D L Security will make the park safer if they have help from guests such as you. I always use the tie line or call officer's cells. Suppose you could call the main D L # & ask to be trans. over to D L Security. Will ask abt hiring & the wages for you Steve as I'm going into Security later today.

Our Security CMs start at $10.25/hr, with premiums for any shift after 7 p.m.. However, I'm not sure we're hiring at the moment for anything but ODV. You could always try to call Casting on 800-766-0888.

And as to KGB....it's a green leaf, that's all I'll say (and that should be enough) ;) .

KGB stands for "Killer Green Bud" Also often called Skunk weed or Skunk bud because it smells like a skunk when burned. Its often grown in the northern part of the state but can be grown just about anywhere, its a fairly big crop out here. And yes they were burning it and inhaling the smoke.

I did try to get to the security officer but he got away before I got a chance so he was probably busy with something else.

A few trips ago I saw a police oficer in the hub, plain clothes but carrying his gun and no jacket so it was obvious, this suprised me that he wasnt asked to at least wear a jacket.

This last trip we also heard people being paged over the PA system which I understand is very unusual.

I don't know about DLR, but at WDW I think if you dial 1990 from any house phone you get connected to that Park's Security Office. 911 from any phone, including a cell phone, will get RCES.

1990 from any house phone gets you security's emergency line. 911 from a house or pay phone gets you Reedy Creek's emergency dispatch center. Problem with using a cell phone to call 911 is that you will probably get Orange County's or Osceola County's emergency dispatch center, not Reedy Creek's as there are no cell towers on property and the tower you connect to will relay the call to that county's emergency center. This could potentially slow down response as they call has to to be relayed to Reedy Creek. Also, using a house or pay phone to call will give your exact location to Reedy Creek while if you use a cell phone they are dependent upon you giving accurate and complete location information.

In an emergency if a house or pay phone is available (there are phones of both kinds pretty much everywhere in the parks) then use that to call 911. If one is not available then use your cell but be prepared to give accurate and complete location information.

Call 1990 for anything requiring immediate security response (fighting, etc), 911 for any medical, fire or other emergency. I have both of security's numbers (the regular one and the emergency one) programmed into my phone just in case. I have called 1990 from a house phone once (someone tampered with an AED and it's alarm was going off) and twice from my cell (another AED was tampered with but no house phone was available, only a pay phone and once when I saw an unmanned security gate on property that had been damaged and stuck in the up position).

Interesting about KGB. I lived for a time back in the late 1980's, early 90's in Mendocino County, part of what is known as the the Emerald Triangle, 3 counties that were big growing counties, Mendocino, Trinity and Humboldt counties!

I have a tee shirt somewhere in storage with a big Emerald picture and a pot leaf over it with the three county's names around it. Mendocino county's economic success was measured by how well the growers did.

I was a sales person for a time (til I joined the broadcasting team a few months later) at a local radio station in Willits, (tiny town of about 4000 which is famous for the Skunk Train). I went on a sales call to sell radio time to a business that sold satellite dishes and TVs and such. The owner, an old hippy himself, told me to come back AFTER growing season, because then he would have money because all the growers would have money to buy stuff in town. When they bought his items he would have money to buy ad time. hehehehe! You had to go to certain industries and types of businesses each season. Nurseries in the Spring and in the Fall, most places were making money cause the growers wers spending money.

I would not have believed it if someone told me that this was the way it worked, but having been involved firsthand by selling adtime was a HUGE eye opener to me! Never in my life had I seen anything quite like the way things worked up there. Don't know how things are up there now. It has been since 1991 since I have been there.

It was an amazing lesson in how that little green leaf can support local governments/economies in certain areas of the great state of California. The other big industry was logging.

But I daresay, the growing industry was the largest. You should have seen how much radio ad time we sold to Nurseries when the growers were buying all their, er, equipment. I have a cassette tape from my days with that radio station with some old radio ads that we ran for the nurseries and other businesses and it is hilarious how it refers to the items only the KGB growers would need in great quantity! Irrigation pipe, and lots of it! Massive amounts of fertilizer! I would go over to the Nursery and see truckloads of pipe and fertilizer and other growing items just packed to the top!

If I can somehow transfer those ads to a disc that I could transfer to the computer, you would all laugh at the absolute openness of the industry there. It was really somethin'! I will never forget my days in that place. it was a great learning experience and something that I am glad I learned.

It was also an interesting experience for my boss, the radio station owner and engineer who would have to go out and service our tower. It was on some private land, which he rented from the owner who was a grower. He would go out to the land which was pretty wild and shrubby and would have to yell out real loud, "I am here to service the radio tower and NOTHING else!" They were sareful about finding people who steal from them. My boss was a real straight dude and he would not even have been interested in the plants, but he always had to make sure the growers who were somwhere out there amongst the crop knew he was there ONLY to service the transmitting tower. hahahahaha! If intruders were caught on growers land, they could easily have been shot. Most everyone growing up there had guns. I did not since I was living in town and working for the radio station. I was a transferred city gal!

I had a couple of friends at that time who were working 50 acres up in the sticks and they built their own pond for showers and working sinks in the bathroom and the kitchen (they rigged up actual plumbing to take water from the pond to the cabin to feed a shower, it was barely a trickle of water coming out and to rig it to the couple sinks as well. No toilet was needed. They had outdoor toilets, if you know what I mean!) hehehehe!!!! :D:
They had no city electricity, they used generators for all electric appliances, mostly the stereo to listen to blues and classic rock! It was a cabin out in the sticks and my friend would go off for a couple days at a time to go tend the crops!

We never went with him, we just had gone up a few times to camp out on the property and have a good old weenie roast and campfire type experience, but he was well known grower in the area. Most of my listeners (I was doing the morning show on the air) would listen to me via generator. I also did a Blues show in the evenings a couple nights a week, called "The Blues with Sues" and they all turned their generators on for that one. I would get them coming to the station to drop off old records for me to spin. That was the old days when we actually still could spin records in a small town station. We had CDs as well and it was just before computers took over the broadcast industry.
These folks lived so far out in the sticks they had no city electricity and had to use generators to fire up the radio! hehehe...It sure was an interesting life. I was there for about 3 years and then moved back to the big city of Santa Rosa in Sonoma county.

The funniest thing about the whole experience? I am allergic to pot. It was awful for me at pollinatin' time in the late Spring and Summer. I was miserable! I could not breathe and was all itchy and my eyes would water and itch. NO FUN AT TALL! I lived on allergy meds during that time. It was how I found out I was allergic to the old weed! :hysteria: Living amongst the area where it was all growing everywhere was a good indicator that I was allergic!

That's my story (and I'm sticking to it) of living in the place where the marijuana industry was king and even a Board of Supervisors member for the county was known as a grower! Of course everyone turned a blind eye, it would have destroyed the economy of an already depressed area. Lots of poor people up there.

It is a beautiful place though! Redwoods and the ocean just a drive over the winding Highway 20 to Fort Bragg and Mendocino. It was pretty and I learned a lot. They actually shut down Highway 101 for the Fourth of July parade (which we would broadcast live from two way radios), because Highway 101 was the Main street through town. I always told people Willits was the second stop light on Highway 101 as you travelled north from San Francisco, the first stoplight being in Cloverdale. hahahaha.....

I have done a great many things in my life and that is just one of them.....More stories some other time....I really should write an autobiography!

I actually have worked in security as well, once for a Jello Biafra concert and many other shows and concerts at a college campus! Security is interesting job. That might be the way to go, Steve! Disney security? That would be cool.

Here in Massachusetts, cell phone 911 calls go to the State Police, like you mentioned they do in Florida. If you're on a state highway, then they're the ones you need. But if you're on a local road and you know where you are, it's best to ask the dispatcher to be transferred to the local town's dispatch center (because after you describe the incident and location, that's what they'll do anyway. Asking to be transferred right off the bat speeds up the process). I presume that the Orange and/or Osceola county dispatcher has the ability to transfer the call to RCES and would do so if asked.

Side note: There are a number of cell phone towers on-property, though I'm not sure how many of them carry personal calls. They may only be Nextel for Disney's use. There's at least three that I know of: one by the Grand Floridian, one near Animal Kingdom, and one way back in the woods due west of the World Drive/Epcot Center Blvd intersection.
