Savage Comments on Autism

Saw a piece on Good Morning America about a "Shock Jock" who stated that 99 percent of kids diagnosed with Autism are just brats who need to be told to suck it up or something along those lines....

I would like this person to have to go to live with 100 families with kids diagnosed and spend about a month living with each, accompanying them to school, etc. It might change his views.
I'm glad that people are talking about this, it is better publicity for the struggles that people with autism and their families go through, and hopefully more effort towards prevention and treatment will be the end result.

With my limited experience with Autistic kids, I've seen that many can be hard to spot without spending time with them, but Autism isn't one of those things for which doctors just hand out diagnoses. Now, ADD on the other hand...
So you know where I am coming from on that comment, I was one of the first five kids in Oregon diagnosed with ADD without the H, so I might have it for real. However, ever since that time I "caught" myself experimenting with suicide and suddenly realizing it was the medication, not me that wanted to do me in, I won't touch any ADD drugs. I think I am happier for it.
But this is a thread about Autism, not ADD... though I would suspect the real ADD and Autism are very closely related. I have nothing but personal experience to back that claim up.

Very Astute Wallaby...
There is no definitive test for most cognitive disorders, and every child is different with different degrees of severity and combinations of different disorders...
A lot of my friends' children still have no definite diagnoses, but that doesn't erase the disability :(
Medications, as you found, are not the answer to everything.

That would be Michael Savage whose real name is Michael Weiner. That would make his name Michael Weiner Savage.

Ha! Obviously you've never served in the military!
"You have shin splints? Here's some Motrin!"
"You have Cancer? Here's some Motrin!"
"Your head's come off? Um...Vicodin and Flexiril!"
That last one's the hard one...that's why doctors have to go to med school!

The last one explains the prevalence of brain donors! ;)

Don't get me started on Kaiser... friend of the family died several years back because they wouldn't look at a place she was feeling acute pain. Then, several months later when they listened to her, it had already metastasized in her liver.

Back on topic... there is a commercial that runs in my area which states that 1 in 4 kids have Autism.. which is a HUGE number as far as i am concerned.. but i do know two kids with autism (both high functioning) and I myself have been diagnosed with mild Aspergers.
When i was a child.. i was a "troubled kid" who wasn't very social, but still managed to get myself into all sorts of trouble due to as the doctor says "a lack of social conciseness'. (Basically, i would do something wrong, solely because it was wrong, and to see if i would get caught, and if i DID get caught, oh well, it was my life anyway...)
Once i was aware of the ho hum view of the world i had, i was able to address it (although it takes a lot of concentration and it creeps up on me from time to time) having kids has really helped me and given me a purpose reason to NOT even attempt things because my actions might affect them more then it affects me.
But as far as I am aware, that's only 3 kids (my own are healthy average fun loving kids.. described as perfect children by pretty much everyone)
