Why?

Why is it, everytime a Disney employee is arrested for something they did off the job on their own time does the news have to emphasize that they are a Disney employee. They rarely do that to other employers. What does Disney have to do with the fact they were charged with DUI or is a child abuser or molester. The whole world doesn't have to be told.

Because it makes it sound worse that it was a Disney employee. It puts a face on the person, and plays on peoples' fear of even that which is designed to make you feel and be safe. It causes you to wonder if that person who looked down toward your teen daughter's lap to check the safety bar actually had ulterior motives, or if you really want that picture with Timon. Never mind the fact that Disney has such an extensive check that they run on every Cast Member, I would assume and hope randomly several times a year. If I had to guess, these checks probably help in catching the bad person, but that part cannot be played up because it wouldn't help the fear-mongering.
But the idiots in the local media certainly loves to put "Disney" in front of anything bad that they possibly can. My mind suddenly falters, but I remember some sort of expression about biting the hand that feeds you...

It's the media's fault for making the WDW CM's, generally all CMs, look bad. The public does not need to know.

I've heard they don't actually do much for background checks. I know when they've scanned my finger prints, the pictures won't show up (I guess I don't have finger prints?) and they never really seem to care so much. Granted, I probably look pretty harmless (and I am), but there are certainly other people who they might want to check a little bit deeper than they did me.

They were particular when they took my prints. Not that found anything anyway when they ran them.

Isn't there some sort of animosity between the local media and Disney? I have heard such. That may play into it!
But I have to agree with Wallaby. The shock value of it being a Disney employee gives the story a punch it would not have if it were just someone who worked at the local muffler shop. We EXPECT more from Disney employees.
Just like when a politician, local or national, does something, it makes news. If it is someone we can identify, it makes us *feel* the story more than just reading it. Many of us *trust* the Disney CMs, cause hey! They work for Disney, the cleanest cut of the clean cut companies in the world!(pssssssst...not anymore!)
And since Disney is such an emotional place for so many, that would make it hit home hard that it was a Disney employee. Psych em out and shock em is the media's mantra!

I think its because Disney has set the bar on service so high that Disney is held to a high standard so when an employee does something human they make a big deal out of it. As far as the peds go Disney is a place filled with children and the press does make a big deal out of them whenever they work with children, teachers, coach's, ministers, they always mention it a lot when they are working with children on a regual basis, maybe hoping more victems will come forward, a big case makes for big news.

Until a few years ago Resort Guests (at least at the deluxe and HAFH resorts) would get the Sentinel at their room's front door seven days a week. Then Al Weiss finally got pissed enough at them that he canceled his subscription. The Sentinel's circulation numbers took a big hit.

Hey, that's a better name than the Oregonian... I follow a certain local radio host in calling it the
Daily Dead Fish Wrapper.
