EB Picks Up a Stray (Again)

I am well known for picking up strays. My two kittys are both taken straight off the street and my puppies are shelter dogs. Today while driving around town I saw a cat on the side of the road. I pulled over figuring it would run away. I know I can't save them all, so if they run away I won't chase, but if they let me pick them up it's meant to be.

Well, the cat let me pick him up. Thankfully I still had Matthias's travel crate in my car and in the cat went. Here is where the fun started: I called the Humane Society (closed). So then I tried Animal Control. Somebody answered the phone but told me that they won't be back in until Monday. I guess I've been spoiled by shows like Animal Precinct in these big cities where Animal Control works 24/7. I asked what I was supposed to do with the cat and they told me that if I couldn't keep it I would just have to release it! So I'm not happy with Animal Control. I then called my vet and thankfully they had an after hours number on the message. He called me back and said that he was going to be in his office tomorrow at 8am, so at leat I have somewhere to take the cat. I also have a message to the Humane Society. I know somebody goes by on Sundays, so I'm hoping they will call me.

For now the cat (as of yet unnamed, but I expect that to change quickly) will stay in Mattie's (Erie's) big pet crate. It''s big enough I can put the little Wal Mart disposable litter box, food and water in there. Kitty will be quarantined so no illnesses get passed onto my babies who are thankfully up to date on their shots. I will be brushing and bathing (one of those waterless cat shampoos) in a minute and then setting up his home. This could be fun!

Say it with me..."I will not get attached, I will not get attached, I will not get attached..."

Tell me about the waterless cat shampoo. We just got two cats, Oliver and Dodger, and I would love something like that. I still have the wounds from babies' first bath.

I love their names! (Although can't help thinking that Dodger was a dog in that movie, lol)

Okay, this cat has obviously been owned by somebody at some point, even if he isn't any longer. He was perfectly calm and even trying to rub up against me during his "bath". I used Out Naturals No Rinse Shampoo for Cats and Kittens. You brush them, and then rub them down with it and towel dry. It does have a bit of what to me is an unpleasant smell, and you will have fur all over your hands, but it seems to work. Kitty didn't mind it at all, and now he is at least a little cleaner. He is in the big crate with his litterbox and some food. I might let him have some mommy/kitty time after I'm done cleaning (my father is coming tomorrow) since he is so docile.

Hey BW, glad to hear you finally got the kitties you've been wanting. Congratulations on your new family members! :D:

...yeah, that's what we said about our foster kittens. Plan was to foster a couple of litters of kittens, give them back, and then adopt adult cats, because they are much harder to place.

Then the SPCA gave us three-week-old kittens to foster. TINY kittens, and they had to be bottle-fed with KMR. We ended up adopting the two of them, because really, how could we say no to this face?

Anyway, I'm glad you're taking care of the poor street-kitty. Keep us updated on how he's doing!

Amphigorey: He/she is so loving, it's going to be a wrench giving her up. However, with four pets in an apartment that only technically allows 2 (with the blessing of the apartment manager), I really can't push my luck. Plus, my two kitties, Makya and Eowyn, are very close and it will just throw everything off adding another cat to the mix. I can only pray that this little guy finds a good family. Sadly, part of being a good pet owner means knowing when to say no. :( I do hope that he is nobody's cat, I don't want him going to the family he was with. I found a couple of sores (probably from being outside) and noticed that he is pretty bony. If he does have a family, he is obviously not being care for.

This is the sad thing about where I live. Lots of strays and abandoned animals. Eragon (my older dog) was probably abused or had a bad interaction with people before he came to the shelter. For a month he was very timid, ears laid back, and would cringe if I tried to pet him. For the most part he is over that (still somewhat timid), but if he does something wrong and I yell at him, he cringes for hours and it breaks my heart. Discipline has been fun. I either scare him or don't get through at all. At least he's a well behaved dog for the most part. Not like little Matthias.

Anybody here doesn't think great minds work alike, here's proof. We have also had cats named Dodger and Oliver! Ollie is still with us, and will be 18 next month.

Of course, their full names were Dodger Blue and Oliver Cromwell, and BW probably gave them different surnames, but still!

When I read "Oliver" and "Dodger", I presumed is was Oliver Twist and Artful Dodger... (And thus also the Disney-connected names from "Oliver and Company", too)
