Wallaby, beware...

Kangaroos Are a Real Treat

Excerpt:

Killing your country's national emblem is vexing. Even in Australia, the Canberra cull was greeted with dismay by animal-rights groups. But fear not. Australians, being a practical people, have come up with a solution. When the national emblem starts to get out of hand numerically – eat them. No less than Greenpeace has recommended that Australians substitute kangaroo meat for consumption of other red meats to reduce land clearing and the release of methane gas from flatulent cattle and sheep.

I've always liked Australia, but I admit this article does make me nervous. As a marsupial, I must consider my own safety when travelling internationally.

My family and I went to Australia and stayed there for 6 months in '65-'66. I remember seeing cans of kangaroo tail soup on store shelves. Never ate it, though. Mom occaisonally gets the Australian Catalogue, and one item they sell are kangaroo skins. I still have the toy koala bear I got on the ship on our way to Australia, supposedly made from kangaroo skin, with plastic eyes and rubber feet and nose, stuffed with cork. It's showing its age, as well as my childhood affection for it.

Time for another redesign of the icon. Add a nice Bullet Proof Vest (and while we are at it, earplugs to protect you from the screaming brats).

I wonder if the airlines would have any problem with someone traveling with a police riot shield and helmet? ;) :D:

Wife and I went to Australia and New Zealand for our honeymoon.

I had kangaroo, camel, and emu (to eat, get your mind out of the gutter). All quite tasty.

We learned a bit of trivia. Australia is one of only two countries that eat their national animal. Can you name the other one?

Close. France. They eat their national animal, the chicken.

(Well, the Gallic Rooster, but still...)

You can get a list of national animals here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_animals

Some of the other animals are commonly eaten, so I might have gotten bad information from the Australians.
